Although some players do seem to want to call it that. Even after I've said it isn't really a MMO, I've had people (quite adamantly) tell me the game qualifies as a MMO in terms of how the gameplay is structured (freeform, travel anywhere, choose objectives, no forced mission stages, etc) and how players can interact (trade, race, clan/group link, PvP, Coop/PvE, etc). Even though I don't think it's a MMO in the sense of WoW or EVE (certainly no subscription charges or massive playerbases), there are still some players who want to call it one.

I think the real hallmark of the typical MMO is the subscription and the business model together, really. I mean, sure you put out lots of updates, but they're not full of extra content to keep us playing, they're true improvements..
Plus, MMO are massively multiplayer... Until we have servers full of several thousand players, I don't think we're massively multiplayer.
Although, since most of the servers are persistant... but that's by choice, you can still play offline any time. MMO, you're stuck online.

That's what I'd call it, a multiplayer capable space-sim with a free (after purchase) multiplayer option and offline option. It isn't limited to online only play. It may share some gameplay qualities found in MMO's, but it's still a fully capable offline game with player controlled servers/sessions for multiplayer.

Its much better than an MMO because its not boring.

I haven't been on in awhile, Wife and I just had our second son... that's a good excuse right? Looking forward to hooking up with you guys again soon. I hope I remember how to fly.

Congratulations! Learn him to fly young, will prepare him for the hardships in simulated space later.
