Using Joystick HAT for strafe?

Post by wavek »

I'd like to make my "HAT" switch on my joystick work for strafe (hor/vert) but the game doesnt seem to allow this.
If I try to do it in the key configuration it doesnt pickup the HAT movement and in the Axis configuration it only allows for horizontal (and that messes up as it conflicts with the cockpit camera movement settings).

Is there a way to adjust this so I can use the HAT for strafe?

Yup, the HAT has its own dedicated control modes. Just click on 'Joystick HAT' in the main options menu until it reads 'Strafe'.

Any way to setup the hat to strafe diagonal? My hat is 8 way but I can only use horizonal and vertical. Limitation of the game mechanics? Thank you.

The strafe mode will be diagonal when it detects diagonal positioning. Remember that the HAT input returns degrees, not button signals. So what the game does is analyze the degree position and determines what thruster(s) need to be activated based on that value. If it's within a diagonal range, it will provide diagonal movement by activating multiple thrusters as needed. Some secondary HAT's (like on the X52) provide button inputs as an option and with this, lateral and vertical input at the same time (with the on/off button signal input) provides the same kind of diagonal movement.

Thanks everyone for the replies. I did manage to get the hat strafing to work. Turns out I had to disable my Saitek profile software in Windows because the profiler wanted to control the hat even though the commands I had defined for the hat in the profiler were blank.

I also have to recal my joy stick in EL once I disabled the Saitek profiler. FYI just in case someone has the exact same issue and is trying to play along......

Cheers!
