Seems NBC the owner of the Sci-Fi cable channel here in the USA decided it would be a good ideal to change the spelling of Sci-Fi to SyFy....., When I first saw this new "word" I thought it meant "Silly Filly" at least that was the first word that came into my mind. The Sci-Fi Channel has always shown some pretty good shows including Serenity....But this new wording seems a bit out of the ball park...he-he. I am curious to see what everyone's opinion is in regards to the new spelling.....

Sci Fi Channel Aims to Shed Geeky Image With New Name
‘Syfy’ Will Announce Name Change, Other Plans at Upfront
By Jon Lafayette
some universe, the name “Syfy is less geeky than the name “Sci Fi. Dave Howe, president of the Sci Fi Channel, is betting it’s this one.
To that end, the 16-year-old network—owned by NBC Universal—plans to announce that Syfy is its new name March 16 at its upfront presentation to advertisers in New York.

“What we love about this is we hopefully get the best of both worlds, Mr. Howe said. “We’ll get the heritage and the track record of success, and we’ll build off of that to build a broader, more open and accessible and relatable and human-friendly brand.
Sci Fi is coming off the best year in its history. In primetime it ranked 13th in total viewers among ad-supported cable networks in 2008. It’s a top-10 network in both adults 18 to 49 (up 4%) and adults 25 to 54 (up 6%).
During its fourth-quarter earnings call, parent General Electric said Sci Fi racked up a double-digit increase in operating earnings despite the beginnings of the recession.
Nevertheless, there was always a sneaking suspicion that the name was holding the network back.
“The name Sci Fi has been associated with geeks and dysfunctional, antisocial boys in their basements with video games and stuff like that, as opposed to the general public and the female audience in particular, said TV historian Tim Brooks, who helped launch Sci Fi Channel when he worked at USA Network.

That's interesting. So the channel had its best year ever with a successful formula in 2007 and 2008, so now it must be changed to something else? Including even its name? Hmmmmm, ok.
Well, considering the idiot Mr. Himmelt at the reigns, no one should be surprised.
Just look at what he did to GE itself and now he's bent on ruining NBC!

That is just, well, silly. No other words to describe the utter "sillyness" of the name change!!
I have been looking at some comments on websites about this and not one has anything positive to say about it. I know the channel shows a lot of non "traditional" SciFi (Note correct spelling ), but there is no need to change the name to something sooooo silly!
If they dont what to be associated with SciFi then change the name to something totaly different.
I am not to up on the ownership of NBC and the like, but it sounds like somebody spent a HUGE amout of money just for the sake of it. Tax Deductable perhaps? I read that the brand consultants came up with 300 odd choices of possible names to change to. 300? That is just SILLY!!!
BTW, what is MST3000?
They shall not grow old, as we that are left grow old:
Age shall not weary them, nor the years condemn.
At the going down of the sun and in the morning
We will remember them.
MST 3000 stands for "Mystery Theater 3000"
And if have never seen it you have missed a lot of laughs.
Can I suggest you check it out on Wickipedia .com?
They can describe it better than I can.
It was a "camp" TV show that had a cult following.

LOL....I guess it just boils down to "Money Talks *BS Walks" (*BS: censored for the young ). I spelled it that way now I can copyright it and own it.....ha-ha-ha. What a Hoot, eh?

Sy Fy is a perfectly logical spelling, if you are Elmer Fudd. It is an abreviation for Sywience Fywiction. I perfectly see it, and it all makes sence to me.
MM, if I ever get to the USA, I'll bring along all the MST3000's I've got stored here. Those series were brilliant - at school nowadays, we still make a sport out of it to watch as many horrible B-movies in any genre and riff away at them.
