AI ships

After playing a while with the ship configurator (BRILLIANT!), I started to wonder how the AI ships are used by the game. Are those customized automatically or does it use predefined templates? If the latter, how many templates are there?

If the number is not a big factor, in order to increase the variety maybe we could add some templates done by the gamers? I can already see the "Best Ship Competition" :)

Again, if it has already been done, sorry (although I admit I didn't see anything on this topic).

Warsign is our unofficial modder and he has made several custom HUD displays as well as some ships. You are welcome to use the "mod kit" to design any custom ship you like within parameters.

AI ships are customized automatically. They can each build a ships with many of the same configuration options you have, so you'll generally encounter quite a range of ships configurations (even colors) as you travel from system to system. They do generally 'stay within the rules' of assembly limits though, so you won't usually find a Talon buzzing around with a Quantum engine. But part selection, position, and scale can be varied. They don't use static design templates.
If the number is not a big factor, in order to increase the variety maybe we could add some templates done by the gamers? I can already see the "Best Ship Competition"
That'd be great to do just to compare and fly various ship designs. The templates are also small enough that they can be uploaded to the forum directly, so if you design a ship you'd like to share, feel free to start a thread in the customizing forum and if a few get posted, I'll also sticky it.

Vice, what do you think about View Your Target option? It would be nice to see some of those designs. Who knows, if this is random maybe the game makes some nice designs, or at the very least, could inspire ours ;)

Could be worth using one of the few remaining key options for. It could work like the external target padlock mode. Others interested?

It will be no small task. Any time the key binding template is updated, it involves some significant code changes that require incorporating a legacy update routine to make sure older builds of the game are converted to use the new template structure. But if I can get some time, I'll look into it soon.

Then take it into consideration when you'll have more than one reason to schedule that task (if there are related activities that make you "open that door"), so that you can achieve more with an effort reduced to a "minimum". ;)

Ok, here's what I decided to do. Rather than going through the risks of changing the key binding template and eliminating another key function, I've added a 'target view' mode to the main view control. This will let you have the same 3rd person view mode currently available for your ship also available for your current target. This will also let you have camera control as with the 'classic' 3rd person view (zoom in/out, pan up/down/left/right). Simply press V three times to access it. You can also switch targets while in the new view mode so you can look at each of the targets in the area. It will be available in the next test build.
