Knowledge for Newbs

Post by Lightknight »

I have an ambitious proposal. I propose that a thread be started that can be stickied containing the veteran board member's insights into important things about the games that newbs need to know that isn't obvious at the beginning of play.

Example - Raking an asteroid with your mining laser mines faster than just letting the mining beam hit the asteroid while you go check out the forums

I just started the other night - first night was on my own with another newb...by the end of the night I was almost done with the game. Night Two - got on an MP server (SW), and hooked up with a veteran on chat...inside of 20 minutes I learned so much that I went from ready to quit, to playing enthusiastically. I want a thread that can help alleviate that issue with new players.

The 'Getting Started' section of the strategy guide is a useful thing to review as well: http://starfighter.home.att.net/evochro ... lguide.htm along with the instructions included with the game.

Beyond that, feel free to post the tips LightKnight referred to in this thread. Once a bunch are posted, I'll plan on incorporating them into a stickied thread.

I'll start with these:

- Buy a mining/tractor beam early. They are often available on the surface of Sapphire (main trading city).

- Use right clicking to lock jump/nav points to items on the nav map. Right clicking on a station's icon locks the nav point directly at the station's hangar. Level your ship to 0 pitch and you can jump right into the hangar.

- Use right clicking as an alternate function mode for items. Rather that buying and installing equipment/weapons, you can load items into your cargo bay for transport by right clicking on them from the 'for sale' inventory list rather than left clicking on them. Likewise, you can transfer items installed onto your ship to your cargo bay by right clicking on them.

- Heat signatures play a big role in missile tracking. To improve the effectiveness of your countermeasures and reduce the chance a missile will hit you, turn off the IDS, cut your engines, then launch countermeasures.

- You can pre-prime your cargo bays by buying or leaving only 1 unit of an item in each cargo bay, then travel to an asteroid field to mine. This lets you recover only the material you want while mining. To buy or sell individual units of items at a time, use right click instead of left click.

- Use drifting to avoid combat when needed. Point to where you want to go, turn off the IDS (space bar), hit the afterburner, then coast to your destination at high speed.

Hello Lightknight, welcome to the forum and the Sim. Glad you didn't quit as there is so much to see in this Sim it would take a pilot a long long long time. Of course I like to explore and I still haven't seen lots of stuff the Sim offers. ;)
