Interesting Reanor and you're follow up explanation does make sense... there are certainly different preferences in those approaches to gameplay. I would be interested to see if Arvoch Conflict may be more to your liking since its structure is mission based progression. Send me a quick reminder e-mail with your EL ID and I'll forward on a registration so you can try it out.

Thanks Vice, I'll definitely try it out tonight. Let me know if you still need my keys.

Very interesting discussion.
Forum where people explain their opinion with this quality is a rare breed too, gaming forum in particular.
(and thanks for your english... If a french native can understand, everybody can too ^^ )

I understand well your approach, reanor. The freedom isn't sufficient in itself.
A sandbox need his proper dynamic's universe, his proper life.
There are two major way in game mechanic for that (in evochron context) :

* micro-interaction complexity :
- ship controls (flight, arsenal...)
- usable equipement (radar, nav, energy management...)
- usable environnement
- ...

* macro-interaction complexity :
- conditional missions
- faction purpose (why not, temporaly objectives...)
- dynamic faction's relation events (global range)
- dynamic warzone frontline
- persistent environnement events (as path in asteriod field...)
- ...

Micro-interactions can be "easy" to code.
But the macro-interaction is not a piece of cake to code as to model.
Evochron Legends do well in a few point, and I have great hope in his developpement.
As a "developper of Sunday", I can imagine the effort behind and really appreciate the work's Vice.

I am just too spoiled with games like X3 where you not only can do anything you like with open world with literally endless possibilities with much wider options of choice but also have a storyline to follow if you decide so. But then again that game is 2x more expensive. So I guess you get entertainment accordingly to the price you pay.

Hi Reanor, as a player of the X series myself I find that the space flight in Evochron is way better than the physics of the X worlds. I've just finished reading a lot of Arthur C Clarke books and the ideas about fuel conservation and galactic/system colonisation he puts accross resonate with, and in the Evochron Universe.
I may have to describe myself as a convert, I have been a long time fan of the X universe but their latest offering failed to satisfy (actually I'd say they took the wrong way at Xtension but thats just me) Then as I was scanning a site or mag or something I spotted this and pranced off home to download the demo. I think I had 30 mins left when I bought it, about the point that I realised how big and challenging that universe could be.
The idea of getting back in a Nova to Re-code the management of a money making machine is depressing.

If I can be so bold, have a crack at

"The Songs of Distant Earth"
{Arthur C Clarke}

or if he's not your bag

"Nova"
{Samuel R Delany}

Both of these I've read lately and they both describe part of my enjoyment here (I'm 32 and books ARE cool, I'm bored of waiting for the next SciFi movie to come out or the occasional tv show of note like Battlestar Galactica) I even had to endure watching close childhood friends of mine get R&^%d in the cinema recently, I was too drunk, I couldn't stop what was happening and I only really took it in after it was over :(

Poor captain Kirk, Scotty and Checkoff I'll always remember you.
Edited for spelling of Capt. Kirk's name! LOL

It's really a true point raised, though. Evochron Legends really offers a lot, but it guides little. A bit of (optional!) guidance through the game would be good and more things to work towards wouldn't be that bad either.

Luckily, I just keep enjoying myself with trying stupid new dogfight moves.

Yes, for a little bit of optional guidance you have the Game tips! Strategy Guide, and Instruction Manual!
Read and use tips, strategy and instructions at your own risk specialy trying stupid new dogfight moves! LOL:P:P:P:P:P

Actually you can learn quite some new or old dog tricks experimenting. Even if they sound or look stupid!LOL:P
