Planet skins

I was just wondering if it would be possible with this engine, to import photographic images onto the planet skins? What I was thinking was satellite images of real planets (or at least parts of them)

And to be really extreme, a collection of Google Earth images?

It would be crappy 2D, of course, but it would be pretty cool to see an "earth" mod where you could look down and actually see real landmarks.

yeah I think it is possible, open up the universe.txt file and you should be able to change the PlanetText= value to the name of the image.

It used to be possible to adjust the values for the heightmap for planets in previous games, but I'm unsure whether this is still the case, it would be an awful lot of work in any event.

From a post by Vice in another thread ("Building a Galaxy from Scratch") :

The game supports either JPG or BMP for the texture image. You can place the file anywhere you want, just be sure to specify the correct path in the 'PlanetText' line so the game can find it. Might be easy to manage everything with a created \\planets folder or something.

I recommend this texture for pure awesomeness. Doubt the game can handle that much data, though.
