I think I learned a very important lesson today. Apparently, when you swap vessels in a hangar it decides to carry over equipment rather than keep it on the ship. While this seems economical, I was building my racing talon (first time I've had two ships). When I go for a test drive and come back, apparently my Excalibur missile system and the majority of fuel I had on my... whatever the big ship is called... went bye bye.
So now I know the cargo hold is for saving a lot more than a fuel converter (which now is more valuable to me than ever). Any other odd traits I should be wary of to save myself anger? And is there a way to eliminate cargo holds all together?

Honestly I think there should be warning dialogs put in place for any instance or situation where this could occur. IE losing items through a swap or other various circumstance.

I think you do get credit for the things stored in cargo and fuel in your tank if you sell your ship with cargo and fuel in your tank, but I could be wrong!;)

That does indeed occur as the ship is either duplicated or swapped and items attempt to be transferred so you keep what you currently have for use on the new ship you acquire. From the instructions:
To recover a stored ship, simply use the Swap option that will appear once a ship is in storage. Your stored ship will then be exchanged with the ship you are currently flying and the contents will attempt to be transferred between the two so you still have the weapons, equipment, crew, and cargo you currently have. If the ship you are swapping to can't carry the same items, they will be discarded or sold. So make sure you sell or store them before you change ships, if you want to recover the credits for them or use them later. If you have crew members and swap to a military ship, they will be dismissed. If you want to keep your crew, make sure you swap to a civilian frame that can carry them.
If you swap ships, then accept the new configuration, you are given full credit for any extra fuel you can't carry.

Darn, somehow I missed that... Okay, good news is that I only lost excaliburs, but I have 7mil and know where Lost Ruckers is. That should get me back there.
