and if so what format/size should the image be?
would this replace the existing texture ( thus be planet/planettext1.bmp for example),
or be in addition to ( be planettext=planettext1.bmp in the universe file)

is it possible to mod planet textures?
It's done through the universe data file. The bigger the better, but keep memory use in mind. 512X512 for low resolution quality, 1024X1024 for medium, 2048X2048 for high.
