Landing on Planets/Targeting Stations

Post by Ratneck »

Greetings,

I'm still in the process of trying out the demo, but I don't seem to be able to figure out how to find where I should land on a planet. I figured I could target the planet to get an "approach vector" but I don't seem to be able to target planets or stations.

Additionally I'm having a large amount of difficulty landing on planets. It seemed so easy in the tutorial since the green things were right there giving me the angle and such, but can anyone offer some tips or advice for me when it comes to landing on a planet?

I'm sure I'm missing something.

BTW so far I love the game. I tried X3, and it was ok, but I'm not really into the whole "fleet management" thing, I'm more of an X-wing vs. Tie Fighter type guy. Hopefully the game will let me stay "lone wolf!!

Check your Nav map when you get close to the planet and check if the planet has any green crosses which suppose to mark the cities you can dock at! Not all planets have cities(Landing on these requires a special thechnique!. And some planets do have hidden cities but are not marked with green crosses. To land or dock at a City you have to set your ship to IDS and maintain forward velocity of 750, and when you enter the gravity field of the planet close to a city the green guiding boxes will be visible fly towards the beacon in the middle of the guiding boxes, if you are to far or at the wrong angle the guiding boxes will be red!

Welcome, and hope to see you soon in full version, this game is really awesome!;)

Great, thanks! I was wondering what those green crosses were, I figured they were ships or something. So if I head towards a green cross I should be ok. I have to reduce speed to 750? Is that a hard number, as in more then that I go boom and less then that and I fall out of the sky? Can moving more power to shields make it so I can land faster (say 1200 or so)?

Yes, speed should be between 200 and 750, and with Heavy shielding you can go up to 1200! but you have to keep augmenting your forward shields at this velocity!;)

bit of a new player myself, but generally, landing on planets isn't that bad, but you shouldn't go too fast otherwise you do go boom, that also applies to leaving, you can tap the tab key (afterburner) for a second before your screen goes red to slightly make you go faster when leaving, I haven't tried increasing the shield strength, so no idea if that will work

There is also a way to use your jump drive to directly jump on to a city's docking bay, but you need to do some precise jump coordinates math calculations!;)

Generally you can safely go somewhere around (At least in a small ship, dunno if that has anything to do with it) 1200. Luck + Shields strength augmenting = 1600 for a few seconds.

Well, I went ahead and bought it. The MP aspect sounds rather fun, Is there anyone who can direct me to a server that would normally have players during Primetime for US East or West?

Hi Ratneck, welcome to the forum and the Sim, great bunch of pilots here that will give any help that is asked for. Go into the multi player section and hit find servers, a list of servers should appear and then right click on the server and it will quire the server to find out how many players are on at the moment. See you out there. :)

The [sw] server is up most of the time and often has people playing.

Fly toward the planet you want and aim for the green x's on the nav map. As soon as you get the "entering gravity field" look around - up down all around - and you should see the red or green approach markers. If you are far away they will be red. Just aim for them and fly around the planet until they turn green. If you're on the wrong side of the planet it may take awhile, just aim for the flashing markers. It'll turn green when you approach the city. Just follow it in.

Most ships with adaquate shielding can go in at 1000 without turning red. You don't need to use the afterburner, just take your time and enjoy the view.

It is possible to jump from docked at a city into space without being blown up, but you need good shields. You have to have the docking tractor beam ON to do it. While you're still docked at the city fit F2 and poof you're out. You will take damage doing it, but in a pinch - like having a bunch of reds attacking you - it's a life saver.

Yes, but before jumping in to space make sure that your jump coordinates are set in empty space!lol:P:P:P

And ALWAYS save when you have landed or refueled!!!!

We have all done it - spent ages going from one side of the universe to the other, reaching the destination - getting it wrong - going boom - Bugga - forgot to save!! Start again!!

Check out the "Stupid things that I have done" thread. Always worth a laugh!

And welcome - See you out there sometime.
