Disregarding the title (I'll get to that in a moment... :)) As I've bought EL and browsed the forum a bit, everyone seems to have a joystick controller. Me, I'm stuck with my keyboard for a bit so I would like some advice to setting the controls up right. Mainly I want to focus on being able to keep control over inertial movement. I understand that past a certain point it's all skill but... To be honest, I still gotta get used to 3D movement.
My left hand (Something about Mach 3 fingers?) is a workhorse. Was thinking about putting... (Note I keep the SpaceBar/W/S controls on the ISD)

Roll R/L on E/Q
Strafe R/L on D/A (Obviously...)
Strafe U/D on C/X
'Burner on Tab (Default...)
Reverse on LShift
Leave the mouse alone
Secondary fire on LControl (I can nudge it fairly easily)
CM on R
Miner on Z
ShieldsGuns on F/G
Shield Distr. on the Arrows

And that's all the controls I can think of right now. And as a 1-Man show... 'Gratz on the awesomeness.

And say I want to put missiles or something on right click, doesn't seem to let me change it?

(Story Time!) I was playing the demo, got the fuel converter and a miner. FD'd to a star and left the beam on. Of course I was a ways out, and I had stopped. Yeah... Little did I know the accelerometer only shows applied velocity versus outside forces. I got up and went to go make a pot of coffee and a sandwich. Five minutes later all I heard was BOOM. So much for my coffee. Finished the sandwich though. :D

Only time I use shift is when I use the forums. Otherwise I just putt-putt troll.

Let this be a warning to you pilots out there: Don't go harvesting stars unless sufficiently caffeinated! It could save your life!

:D

Oh, and welcome to the Forums, Ian2454

The individual has always had to struggle to keep from being overwhelmed by the tribe.
If you try it, you will be lonely often, and sometimes frightened. But no price is too high to pay for the privilege of owning yourself.

Hi Ian, welcome.

I use a Nostromo N52 for all the keyboard controls, even thrust, roll, and strafe on the dpad portion. (not the n52te which is the newer model but not as good imho). Here's a pic of it and etc http://www.amazon.com/Belkin-F8GFPC100- ... B0000DC643 You can generally pick up this older model on ebay for pretty cheap nowdays.

It may not look like it has enough keys, but actually, it's four layers of the keys you see because there's the top layer, then you program buttons to get you to the red layer, green layer, and blue layer. Hitting one of those keys gives you another layer of key assignments. All keys are fully programmable, and stay within the programming software as profiles that you create. For example, I choose my cod4 profile, or my Evochron profile, or my mouse profile, etc, before going into a game or whatnot.

Just another idea for ya.

Hi Ian2454, welcome to the forum and the Sim. I use my laptop keyboard and a mouse most of the time and I leave most things as they come. I did switch a few due to my laptop not having a regular number pad (lol). A joystick does seem to work better for combat. Hope to see you in space in the future. :)

Welcome aboard Ian2454 :).....I use an inexpensive Logitech attack 3 joystick. Works rather well and I am able to adjust the buttons to key commands....make sure to assign the right shift key on your key board for your missile key....the left key can send an inadvertant missile hello if you miss using the enter key to type text :D

I generally run really late hours, if anyone lives in the UK it improves your chances greatly. I live in the US but I stay up all night and sleep in daytime, I swear my boss hates me.
