What sort of software do you need to look into designing 3d cockpits? Any affordable stuff? Within the reaches of a newbie cockpit designer?
I am working civil engineering office and approx 19 years using 3ds max(3d studio it's old name) and I can say I am power user for this software. Also photoshop and other softwares for help... In the game industry Maya and MAX (by autodesk each) are using greatly...
A lot of software around. All are doing same thing.
But I prefer always Max... second Maya...
as much as I like the TieFighter cockpit. It's just not fitting for most of the ship designs in EL. I may prefer it personally, but I voted for the Raptor for pure functionallity and fit to our current ship designs. I did download truspace 7.6 and depending on how hard it is for me to learn and use- I may just do a modified Tie Fighter cockpit my self.

Ah right, sounds like something a "casual dabbler" might be better staying away from then
I'll let you make the cockpits War.
So the winner first, THEN the Viper, THEN the Raptor
Single seater Raptor would fit the EL Military ship design

I like minimal, functional cockpits so I vote for the Raptor.
The F-35 is also functional, but it's designed for a fighter jock crammed into a tiny cockpit. It would be nice for the smaller ships in the game, but the Raptor seems like it would fit more ship designs.
Warsign...Let me know if you want some help with the display graphics(for BSG or X series)...I can work something up and send it to you for tweaking. I've played all the X games and I have a friend who does his own scratch built models for Sci-fi--his latest craze is BSG so he has lots of screen shots for me to look thru.
Here's a link to what I was playing around with from your screen shot.(just the center display)..very rough..I doodled this while I was watching tv..

I really liked the X series cockpits. The critical thing here is that you can see down, which is a weak point in most cockpit designs. If you look at how much screen real estate it's occupying it's average, but it's divided in a way that doesn't leave you with any serious blind spots.
Well...the original X cockpit was built as a primary exploration ship. I'm guessing that this 'open' design was a logical step in it's functionality. Now if your designing a combat oriented ship, I think it's just as logical to lean more twords armor and minimize your view to limit vulnerability and still maintain a workable view. Given that a lot of threats for aircraft are ground based there is a logical step to have more armor below and more visibilty above. Likely this trend followed into space fighters. Some do have ports(like a tie fighter) or camera's( alot). But I guess in Evochron everybody likes to keep thier butts armored.
I don't want to bust anyone's "bubble", but I like the cockpits that Vice made. Save the "X" cockpits for the "X"games and the Raptor cockpits for the raptor game. I kind'a like Vice's cockpits. I suppose there are people playing the "X" games wondering why the cockpits can't be more like "Legends" cockpits.
It's all because "the grass is always greener on the other side of the street".
I have seen some very nice "mods" of Vice's cockpits come and go, but to disregard them altogether, that I do not understand.
So I vote for Vice's cockpits!

Well 2 votes for TGPE (The Greatest Progammer Ever) but I must confess I do like warsigns hud mod with the energy/shield in percentages rather than just the bar.
