Are the messages I get regarding beacon locations, for example the very first message when you start the game, stored anywhere for viewing/checking later?

Ah Ha ! I got caught like that in ER!!

Old Navy Trick - always write the message down, you never know when you will need it again. By the way, it might be a good idea to add the beacon location into your maplog. Easy to revisit then if you loose the bit of paper you wrote the message on!!!!

Or, you can get one of the books I've got... not sure they sell them to the public but the NSN = 7530-00-222-3521 (it's a green book... anyone ever in the US military should know what I'm talking about)

When the message comes up, do a screen shot. You can print it later or just keep it on file. :)

There really should be a message log where these are stored.

I still recommend the map log, it's a great tool for saving this kind of information because you not only save a text entry, it also stores the location for you on the map in relation to your text entry. I'd suggest saving it as something like:

Beacon1 - 15 units of Elec., Erato2, -14000 Y

Yuppers....Have to agree with Vice, this is the best way. I also took a screenshot of each one and have them saved. It would be too much of a spoiler to post them, so if anyone is really desperate to see one just u2u me.

Its true that you can mark the coordinates and take a screenie, and that's exactly what I started doing in ER. However, I will be the first to say that this is not newbie friendly. They should be automatically stored in a log or something.

I'm torn on this one. It'd be nice for the game to auto-log the beacons so I could simply go back and read them. Ha, another thing my science officer SHOULD do, lol.

But as I'm going for the higher beacons now, which are so darned difficult to get to, I'm finding that by the time I get to one and that glorious text comes up on the screen, I'm absolutely worn out and need a break anyway. Plus, I jump up out of my chair, do a touchdown dance, it's just an incredible feeling to finally get the darned thing. So, it's a real treat to be able to sit there with my Top Secret Evochron Legends notebook, transcribing the beacon's message.

Transcribing the beacon lets me savor the moment. :)

Agreed; that was one of the first questions I asked here when I bought the game recently. I thought I had missed seeing a button somewhere for a pilot log.

For now, it might be helpful to mention in the game instructions that beacon clues should be written down, because your ship won't store them for "security" reasons (in case you're scanned, killed, or captured). Or whatever plot device works. It would seem more like an intentional game mechanic, instead of a missing feature.

Why wouldn't my gazillion dollar ship be able to store a simple message? As far as writing stuff down, I may as well get rid of the nav screen and draw pictures, too. Unless Vice has a specific reason, I see no good explanation for the lack of automatic message recording.;)

The recording of messages by the ships log was outlawed by the intergalatic DMCA treaty of 2021.

The European Union declared saving messages in an OS is considered unfair competition.

No, but seriously, it's a bit of a gameplay thing. Plot-wise, you could indeed explain it as that you can't save those messages for security reasons.

As I try to grasp your roleplay suggestions, I can't help but wonder at the thought of my pilot , who lives in the future and flies a million plus dollar ship, scrambling for a scratch pad to record information. Plus he'd have to find a pen, then try to steer the ship with one knee while writing everything down. Then he'd probably knock his drink out of its cupholder and fry the circuit board, thereby spelling his demise. Don't even get me started on trying to find the note a month later in the ship's glove box. C'mon, here.

I read a sci-fi short story recently, where a combat spaceship was doing fine with conventional weapons against the enemy, until it was breached by a cybernetic attack. The ship's computer systems were subverted, and turned against the crew.

One little paper Post-It note with some pen scratches on it, is safe from that kind of attack. And yeah, the game doesn't model this kind of thing, but hey, if we're going to roleplay...

Actually, this is why networks are outlawed on all colony vessels... because the bad guys can gain access to your ship's systems via the wireless network. (Battlestar galactica... probably season one or two, can't remember)

Also, a pilot's rudder in the past was a closely guarded secret. I treat my notebook in the same fashion. There are a myriad of tactics, locations and trading data in my notebook, some of which I share openly and the rest... well, I wouldn't want anyone gaining access to it :)
