First off, I'm real impressed with this game. So I hope I don't sound too critical.

It seems to me that the navigation system really needs updating - or at least several more additional magnifications. The pointer and cross hair markers are too large to make x, y, z waypoint identifications.

For example, the platnum probe is rendered almost useless because the navigation field can not be magnified enough to accurately click on the positions of probed roids. I've messed around with my probes for hours and have not yielded usuable navigation points since the astroids are already very close together.

More magnification in the navigation area would allow us to use the cursors which right now are 1000 times larger than the points we are trying to select on the map.

And because there is a 3D axis flip of the navigation map makes magnification even more neccessary.

Probes will not return coordinates for asteroids. They don't scan rock, they are designed to pick up other objects. Probes (in conjunction with the nav map) are deisgned to not give precise positions (keeping stealth/cloaking devices sufficiently useful), but offer accuracy to a detail level within the scanning range of your sensors for the objects they are designed to detect.

I was under the impression that a platnum probe would scan for high yielding platnum roids.

I created some probes using platnum ore. What exactly are they detecting and what are all the yellow and green dots scattered on the nav map? From your explaination, I'm still not really sure how I'm suppose to use the information being yielded.

Platinum is the primary ingredient in making the devices, but they detect ships and hidden containers. You can even pick up cloaked ships should someone in multiplayer be using stealth devices. One of their more beneficial uses though is to retrieve the location of containers that you would otherwise have to rely on the imprecise directions from a science ops crew member for. The probe will give you the location within about 2000 meters and there is often more than one in the same location. Certain 'quests' can also be aided with these devices :)

If my Science Op's loyalty wasn't already 100, I'd fire him for not explaining how the probe worked in the first place. haha. All that running around in circles in space - he's collected quite a bit of cash.
