Do passengers effect your speed?

I have just picked up my first passenger as I think I know where they want to go (finally).

But as I start flying I notice my speed is limited with an M after it:

I have sound turned off so I might have missed a verbal warning, but no message showed up eg: "speed limited as you are carrying a passenger"

or has something else happened?

Press M you've got match speed of target turned on

Ah.. havnt tried to do that on purpose yet.

Reminds me of Freelancer when you would latch onto another ship and just go sight-seeing. Must try that here.
