Another new pilot, some questions

Post by Aguila »

Hi, new pilot here, just bought the game after a brief look at the demo. I'm a major flight sim/space sim fan, and have played just about everything out there -- Wing Commander, X-Wing/Tie, Freelancer, Independence War, Privateer, X3, and others I can't remember. I've just dipped my toe into into the game, but it seems to combine the best thing about my favorite game of this type (Independence War 2's flight dynamics) with a more open-ended sandbox approach. So far, so good. I think I'll like this game.

So, a few quick questions:

* When first starting the game, I get a message about the beacon quest. I don't want to jump on that right away, but eventually I'll follow that storyline. Is that info with the hint on location and the one coordinate stored somewhere in the game, like a pilot log? I couldn't find it. Are we supposed to write it down on paper when beacon info, or other info like that comes up?

* The lateral and vertical ("strafe") movement works okay for chores like cleaning solar panels or fine-tuning alignment, but it seems too weak (compared to flying with the main engine) to use for avoidance maneuvers in combat, like a sideways slide on initial head-on approach to bad guys. This is very early in the game, with just the starter Talon ship frame, a couple of wing upgrades and (I think?) one engine upgrade... but the Talon is supposed to be the fastest and most maneuverable ship, yes? Do the strength of lateral and vertical maneuvers improve with further wing or engine upgrades? Or is this just the way it is, and lateral motion is only used for minor course correction?

* Searching around for info on the forum, I ran across this link to a strategy guide for Renegades:

http://www.starwraith.com/evochronreneg ... rguide.htm

Some of it might be close to spoiler info that we're supposed to discover over time (and I quickly skipped over the part about beacon info), but it still seems like a lot of helpful background info for someone new to the game series. It goes deeper than the instructions that come with the new Legends game, and I didn't see a stickied link here on the forum to an updated version for Legends. Is most of that info still applicable to the newer Legends game? It looked like it might be, but I wasn't sure.

Welcome to Evochron, Aquila. The quest will eventually give you something of use to you. I'm not sure if it's the same as for Renegades though. same applies for the strategy guide.

I myself have some 17Bil in Renegades but am starting again in Ledgends.

Hello and welcome.
* When first starting the game, I get a message about the beacon quest. I don't want to jump on that right away, but eventually I'll follow that storyline. Easiest way to manage them in game is to use the map log. Click on 'Set Loc' to plot the nav point to your current location, then click on 'Add to Log'. Enter a description and press enter, a blue marker will appear on the nav map to help guide you back when you want to check it out again in the future.
You may have left the IDS on, which means your input will be fighting against the control computer. Turn off the IDS to bypass the computer and you'll have significantly more control over the lateral and vertical thrusters. The Talon is quick and agile, fastest and most maneuverable of the civilian frames, but not the fastest (and iirc, not the most maneuverable) overall. You'll likely notice improvements with wing/thruster upgrades for roll, yaw, and pitch performance... engines just effect raw forward/reverse acceleration and top speed.

One of the best ways to use the strafe thrusters is to hold a diagonal approach to a target. You can do this with the IDS on, just activate the opposing thruster(s) against the direction the IDS wants to center to and you can maintain a drift in a given direction. For added slide, turn off the IDS and input the level of drift you want (performance is pretty good in this mode relative to your engine acceleration/deceleration). You can also use variable strafe control if the flight control device you're using supports axis channels to provide it.

Much of the information in that guide is still useful for the new game. Some things have changed a lot and others are entirely new, but it's still a good resource of information. A new guide is planned for Legends.

Welcome Aguila.

1. You can use "add log" button for taking notes and saving coordinates. You can then recall with "map log" button and find anything, any gate, any planet ot beacon in your list.

2. Side trusters are very effective, when you use throttle and gain some forward speed. It would increase according to your wings, engines and frame types.

I played those sim games too.
I know, you!ll like EL.

Welcome home...

That Renegades strategy guide is an excellent resource. There's quite a bit there that should probably be incorporated into the instructions supplied with the game install, mostly taking out the content-specific spoilers (which I had to skip past myself even though it's for a different game!). The combat guide is excellent and has certainly dramatically improved my own combat abilities with the AI.

Aquila, multiplayer is a great place to ask questions... and I think i speak for almost everyone when I say, no worries about getting attacked by other players while in MP. There's pretty much an unspoken code of conduct when it comes to attacking people :)

Hi Aguila, welcome. Please continue asking questions as things come up, as the answers seem to always give nuggets of insight to many of us.

I played Renegades last year and just picked up again with the new Legends launch. Both are fun and very addictive.

Deciding whether or not to jump into multiplayer and how soon to get into it, I feel, should be carefully decided. In single-player, you grow, earn, and learn slowly, but it is so rewarding to discover each little mystery. In multiplayer, you earn and learn very very quickly, and it's great to fly with all the guys here, totally exciting funzies, as you group together to fight the bad guys (take a look at the screenshots section). I jumped into multiplayer as soon as I got Renegades, and it was just a blast. With Legends, I'm staying in single-player for awhile, and finding there's so much more to Evochron than I ever knew before (however I do miss my Leviathan and zillions of dollars, lol).
