Keyboard Settings and Player Profile Backup

Post by XB7 »

I want to upgrade to 1.025. What files do I save to backup my keyboard settings and Player Profiles?

Keyboard Settings and Player Profile Backup

For the following, 'x' is any number, if you have just one pilot profile it will be pilot0.sw.

You will see a keymap8.sw in the directory, I suspect that is the DEFAULT keymap, and that keymap0.sw overrides it when loaded. I back up keymap8.sw anyway.

These are pilot-specific:
pilotx.sw, maplogx.sw

Your keyboard and controller mappings:
buttonmapx.sw,keymapx.sw, stickt.sw
Note that if you change to a new joystick or whatever, you need to invoke the OPTIONS menu and controller settings for any new setup.

You can back up sw.cfg , those are your graphics options and so forth. But Vice suggests in another older thread
http://www.starwraith.com/forum/viewtopic.php?t=3433
... that to prevent problems, it is a good idea to let your game "rebuild" sw.cfg after any new install.
If you install the game on a new system, it's a good idea to let the game rebuild the SW.CFG file anyway to accomodate differences the new system may have compared to the old one. The game will build that file based on what it detects on the system and will attempt to optimize settings based on the configuration it detects.
Here is specifically what I back up (I run with only one savegame slot):
buttonmap0.sw
keymap0.sw
keymap8.sw
maplog0.sw
pilot0.sw
stickt.sw

... having said that, you really only need to worry about info from the previous post if you intend to make a completely new install.

Most people (WinXP and previous) seem to have no problem if they run the new version installer (say, 1.025 on top of 1.024)... "on top" of a previous install. Just run the new version installer to upgrade - you don't have to back anything up.

With WinVista, you get a weird error message if you do that.

So in WinVista, I *UNINSTALL* EvoChron Legends, BUT the original folder (x:\\sw3dg\\EvochronLegends) AND the configuration and pilot files are left there - they are not deleted and the new install / version recognizes them. I back up before just in case, but I don't have to. This also would probably work with WinXP/Previous if you want to do that for soem reason ("to insure a clean install of the new version?").
