I have been happily blasting ships with my particle gun thing (the one I started with).
I thought I might try my hand at some laser firing to see if it helped.. so I bought one.
When I shot (left-click) it seemed to shoot both at once but I was caught with a missile and blew up.
So I reload and buy another laser but this time I can only get my particle gun thing to fire with left-click, laser seems lidle.
Is my laser a secondary weapon or is that missiles only?
What am I doing wrong as far as choosing which gun thing to shoot with (preferably both as happened first off)
Or is there some other limitation - I have both gun things in my 2 available slots and it refused to sell me one kind saying I already had one of that kind, but let the laser in the vacant slot.. so I think I have them mounted correctly.
Thanks.

Lasers left-click or right-click
Right click is for secondary weapons, such as missiles, left is for primary weapons, such as particle and beam. To select either particle, beam or both for firing, you need to press N until the left MFD displays your required choice. This can then be fired using the left mouse button.

Thanks Zenith.
I searched for this info but found nothing.. I guess I was not thinking about the right terminology.
