The highest class of fulcrum drives is 5.
However, there is an experimental mantis drive available if you know where to look, with about double the range of a class 5 fulcrum drive.

You'll have to hunt around a bit, but generally the better equipment is located in the more dangerous systems. It's also worth checking the economy quadrant map, systems with high economies are more likely to have better items for sale.

Higher class weapons are available in high economy systems - a quite high economy nearby Sapphire would be Pearl. However, for the Mantis Drive you'd either have to find yourself some hidden planets, either that or complete the beacon quest.

I finally found a secluded and unlabelled system (thanks to some useful hints from Eclipse), containing one planet, which happens to offer all civilian frames, the best weapons/equipment, not to mention the Mantis Drive. All I can say is, that's one hell of a planet!
I'm still agonising over which frame to upgrade to, as I've had my Striker a while. My first choice would be a Leviathan, but I've heard that those aren't particularly useful these days, and certainly not in most combat situations. Any tips?

What kind of activities do you prefer in the game? A lot of design criteria, including the frame itself that you build on, are best focused on what kind of objectives you like to complete.

Well, at the moment I'm trying to make as many credits as possible, via mining, transporting, trading etc. Eventually I intend to move into combat, but a military vessel is probably best for that goal, and those don't come cheap or easily.

If you're confident in evasion, the Striker you had would probably still be good. But an upgrade to a Phoenix can provide some useful additional armor with a minimal sacrifice in agility. If you don't want to be concerned too much with evasion, want to reduce fuel stops, and want a ship that can take some hits on occasion while trying to dock/descend, then the Leviathan might not be a bad choice (particularly if you have other pilots in multiplayer who want to fly escort or you have a fleet in single player).

would there be any scope for a hull that had a decent amount of assembly points but sacrificed armour for agility? i can see the dog fighters loving a ship that can move like the starting ship, but have the fittings for some decent gear. yeah olde glass cannon style
forgive me if there is a ship already like that, i've only been able to browse civy frames and they seem to be a fairly straight forward change from fast and un-armoured to slow and heavily armoured the as the ship supports more assemble points.

Try them all.I'm still agonising over which frame to upgrade to, as I've had my Striker a while. My first choice would be a Leviathan, but I've heard that those aren't particularly useful these days, and certainly not in most combat situations. Any tips?
Seriously, you can resell the ships at their value, and the prices are rather affordable - back in Renegades, a Leviathan set you back around 100.000.000 Credits, a far cry from what you pay today (recession in Evochron?).
Personally, I dislike the Leviathan for it's lack of acceleration more than anything else - load the thing up 5 bays of ore and try for yourself. That said, it's like a flying wall of bricks. They're painfully hard to kill even with missiles.
Personally, I found that the Phoenix frame makes a good basis for a jack-of-all trades type ship (let's play "Spot the components"), even though I had to reconfigure the loadout for pure combat missions, like pacifying a hostile system (Cargo bays? We don't need no stinkin' cargo bays!).
Try them. Find your own balance. Oh, and post us a screenshot once you're finished building your dream boat.

Yeah but you need the rank to get a decent military ship.
I'm just at present building up my credits and gettin a Leviathan (well If I can find the sector where I can get it!) Then I will look at increasing my rank to get a decent mil ship.
In the mean time, plenty of new sectors and hidden localities to explore.
Now can someone advise me if the co-ords to the Unknown Sectors has changed?

Thanks for the advice, I'm not too worried with pure combat missions at the moment, so a big ship that can take punishment may be the way to go for my current activities. That said, I'm sure I could still pull off a few dogfights (albeit slow ones) even in the flying 18 wheeler that is the Leviathan. On the plus side, even if it's slow, it's going to take a lot of fire-power to bring down, and by then my enemies with have Excalibur missiles all over them like a pack of starved dogs. It's a game of pros and cons it would seem, and I have to weigh the advantages against the disadvantages, coupled with my needs.Originally posted by Vice

I didn't realise you received full value for the frames, that's quite handy. A Leviathan in Renegades cost 100 million? I dare say, I'd not afford one for some time if they still went for such a price. And there's me thinking I'm rich at 17 million!Originally posted by Blackthorne

I too found the Leviathan seemed somewhat slow, around 670 with a good engine fitted, which does somewhat limit it's combat potential, not to mention results in much slower trips. It does however seem the best choice if you want to run cargo, particularly through hostile systems (of which there are a great many, for me in any case), as you have plenty of loadout points to work with.
I did consider going with a Phoenix, as my Striker's seen me well through much of the game, but somehow I seem to keep coming back to the Leviathan. In any case, I'll experiment a bit and see what's going to work best for my interests.
I'll post a screenshot once I'm happy with my choice.
Also, for those of you with Alliance ships, what kind of set-ups do you run, and what benefits do they offer aside from the obvious? Do you still keep duel profiles, one with a civilian ship and the other military?
Thanks for the help, it's nice to get someone else's perspective every now and then.

Well, if you intend to stick with the leviathan, at least slap a level 9 or 10 engine on it; it's max speed is 750 with the level 10, and while that's still slow, it's bearable.I did consider going with a Phoenix, as my Striker's seen me well through much of the game, but somehow I seem to keep coming back to the Leviathan. The military ships can't be customized (you get to pick the size of the fuel tank, but that's about it). They all sport extremely heavy shields (level 10), ungodly speeds (the slowest has one of 1000, while the Evoch-C has 1200 topspeed), high maneuverability, absolutely no cargo space...and horribly flimsy frames. Even the most robust of the fighters has about the frame armor of a phoenix. They're the epitome of hit&run performance - get in, maul a ship or two on your approach vector and get out of range before they can retaliate.
My usual military loadout is a jumpdrive, a class 3 repair system, a cannon relay system, a class 5 shield booster and a stealth generator; the armament consists of a banshee cannon, fusion laser and a pack of excaliburs (take note that I'd switch to other missiles for PVP, since excaliburs are rather weak against experienced human pilots).
My civilian ship usually has similar equipment; the jump drive, shield generator and repair system stay, but I ditch the stealth generator and sometimes the cannon relay in favor of a mining/tractor beam and a cargo scanner (which I find remarkably useful when it's once again time to hoist the black flag and say "arrrrrr" a lot.) I usually hire the full crew, Navigator, Weapons Officer, Engineer and Science Officer - take note that you won't be able to transport passengers once you have all 4 of those onboard. When in doubt, fire personnel according to taste.
FWIW I went for a phoenix frame with Wings 5, Engine 5, Shields 8, a 800 unit tank and 5 cargo slots. YMMV, obviously. My favorite military frame is the Evoch-C, which is the fastest and most maneuverable of the bunch. I like moonlight and long walks on...wait, that was the other website.
