Dedicated Server: Request

Post by Ironbar Sinister »

Dear Vice:

Would it be too much trouble to re-compile the Dedicated Server exe to not be so Direct3D / graphics hardware acceleration dependent?

My ideal dedicated server program:

1. Runs in the background as a service.
2. Has little, if any, GUI management alongside on the host server.
3. In the case of Win32 apps, must be easily manageable remotely via RDP

Number 1 is no big deal - I can force just about anything that wants to run in userland to run in the background as a service.

Thanks,

-IB

no.

(oh hang on that wasn't very constructive was it?)

Simply put, The server program is written in the same language that the game is built in, a language designed for building 3d games, and as such is dependant on being able to run using directx. This means that RDP will not work, and that the gui needs to be there.

Well, no, he's not Vice. I'm amazed by your capacity to distinguish two words starting with a 'V'. :P

But without kiddingg, Verb, together with me, have intimate knowledge of the server program due to our work on the dynamic server.

Besides that, his answer is absolutely complete. The new version of the server program currently being tested will most likely be dependent on DX9.0c - which is more than less.

Like verbosity has pointed out, this is due to the programming language used and not something Vice can avoid.

Well, once I get past & ignore your veiled insults, I see one direct answer to my question:

Me:
"Would it be too much trouble to re-compile the Dedicated Server exe to not be so Direct3D / graphics hardware acceleration dependent?"

Verbosity:
"No."

I guess that means it won't be much trouble at all then eh?

It's a simple question, with a simple answer. So far all I see is e-peen wagging.

It's a simple question, a simple answer. Then, a completely unnecessary jab at verbosities helpful post, a bit of attitude of yours there, and then something that usually is not necessary around here: a confirmation that the answer that it is impossible or at least improbable.

Yet for some reason, you appear to interpret the complete opposite of our answers. Makes me doubt whether you read our posts instead of working on your 'e-peen'.

Honestly, I've got no tolerance for this kind of stuff around here - I doubt others will have. If you're trying to be mean or degrading to anyone - established or new - you'll find little support from the community.

Once more, the answer to your question is: No, it cannot be recompiled in such a way, or if it is possible, it most likely will not in the short term. I boldened it just for certainty.

Whoa Ironbar! Lets slow this down! Had I seen your post before Rami replied, it would have likely been pulled.
Lighten up big guy! We are a small community of like-minded gamers and if you really think about it, nobody is trying to upset anybody. Now, I'm not going to get into the middle of this, but I suggest you take a deep breath and think about what you really want to say! OK?

It might be good for the usefulness of this topic if the irrelevant posts were indeed pulled. The question might be asked more often, and verbosity really answered it adequately. :)

That is, if he agrees to that as well :).
