Server Questions

Post by Joker »

Evochron Legends. Woooonderful game.

I'm slowly getting my crew on. We're 3 outta 6 right now.

I'm looking into setting up a Private Server so that we can galivant around like a bunch of total flying retards without bothering anyone else until we become accustomed to the flight mechanics, and other game systems.

So a few questions.

Firstly, publishing a server. Can I remove the Public Listing? So that it remains an unlisted Private Server?

Secondly, the IP it has "registered". Can I give it a domain? The reason I ask is that the IP on my server isn't TOTALLY static. It changes once a month or so, but I have a domain assigned to it, so it updates automatically.

Also, is there anything I should be mindful of while hosting a server? Anything proned to crashing clients? Options I should know about? Etc?

Again, I have no intention of further splitting the community with another public server. :) This is just to help us ramp up to speed with all you Renegade Vets. ;)

hi joker,

yes it can be private,

to my knowledge it has to be an IP, but I've always recommended that you restart you server prog daily anyway

its pretty stable all in all.....

( actually half of us renegade vets are still trying to get up to speed, and we are usually a pretty helpful bunch.....)

So how does one make it "private"?

When I load the Server Console, I get a connect button.
Is the server hosting even before I click connect? (Whereby I'd just need to manually connect)

In other words, as soon as you load the server console, it's hosting?

nope, once you hit the connect button its hosting,

I believe the option to make it private is "internet visibility status"

There is an "internet visibility" option, Joker and that's how you make the server private. Since it won't be seen by your friends, you'll have tp provide them with IP#'s.

You'll have to give your friends the public IP address of your server, and just make sure you've opened TCP ports 3398 & 3399 in your firewall for inbound connections.

The EL game client will not accept a domain name in the connection field: it wants an IP address only.

I've found a few inconsistencies with the previous posts, but they were helpful none-the-less.

The default port is 3999, not 3399 for instance.

Also I've found no option to click on to change from Public to Private.
It's listed Private if I'm not "connected" (but then hosting is grey).
And it's listed Public if I connect, where by it IS connectable, but I can't remove it from the public list.

I wonder if the options with which you are referring are all Renegades based, and the Legends server doesn't support them? Or is there another Server App I should be using?

Sounds like it's a different server format if there is no "visibility" line to click on.
Better get Vice in on this...

I think the difference is refering to the server program versus the client. The client can also host games as a server while participating in the game at the same time. It offers the 'private' option with the checkbox to list or not list the game online. The server program is designed for hosting public internet multiplayer games with a 'dedicated' system and a 'dedicated' internet connection.

So if you want to host a private game and participate in it, use the client and its hosting option and do not click on the option to list the game online. If you want to host a public game without participating in it (unless you log in from a different system), use the server program. You can also set up a password protected session with the server program to block other players from joining, if desired.

Doh! I just checked my own firewall - 3998 & 3999 indeed! I apologize for the error.
