I must admit, I nearly gave up on Legends based on the demo. It's not that the game is bad, it's just that the accessibility could do with some work. I actually uninstalled the game and only came back because Vice was so helpful in an email. I thought if this guy is so willing to help, and so promptly, then I'm willing to give the game a second chance. Plus, there's such an overwhelming positivity in the forums, it's compelling!
Anyway I'm glad that I installed it again, so much that I'm probably buying it now.
But I'm curious. Why does your fuel supply continually dwindle when you're docked at a station? The instructions mention cutting thrust to avoid this, but it doesn't seem to work. If I hit backspace at the moment of docking (or even hit F3, then backspace, then F3 again to re-enter the inv screen) my fuel still ticks away slowly. It means I can't take my time to browse without worrying where all my precious fuel is going!
Secondly, I find the navigation map just a little bit confusing. I think I'm figuring it out, but how can I target spaceports on planets so that I know where to return those "retrieve floating cargo" missions to? When I reach a planet and jump to the nearest station, it's still hard to see it from above the atmosphere. I've tried right clicking on them from the navigation window but it doesn't seem to work.
Third, it would be nice if there was a loud "clang!" noise or something similar when I bump into things. Unless I'm missing it, it's very confusing when I'm too close to an object but I don't know whether it's moving, I'm moving, or we're both moving because I'm banging into the side. A "clang" or "scrape" would help me realise I'm being a klutz.
One final question for now, I see all the missions in the demo fall into about three different types (races, retrieval, cleaning). I'm assuming there is a lot more variety in different systems and as the game progresses?
I feel like I'm being a bit negative here, but frankly Legends is exactly the kind of game I enjoy. Moreover, it's the first space sim I've considered buying since... since... well, since Freelancer actually.
I\'m almost convinced to buy it...

im guessing at planet stations? try turning your ids system to 'inertial' that might help, but I'm no expert when it comes to planets ( im a space bunny)Originally posted by krayzkrok

its a good point, I think right clicking on the planet-side stations is disabled because its a short route to death, so try thisSecondly, I find the navigation map just a little bit confusing. click near the station but so you are out in space (jumping into an atmosphere really isn't nice on your paintwork) hit the rear view / above view, and adjust. this should bring you close, once you start 'hitting the planets gravational field ( waay above the atmosphere
the nav is under a fair bit of discussion at the moment, and vice listens to what the players have to say ( hence player led development)
good point there used to be , in some cases ( stations mainly ) you get a 'entering gravity field' messageA "clang" or "scrape" would help me realise I'm being a klutz.

also check out the crew management area of the inventory screen, you can take 'passenger' contracts there

Definitely a lot more missions, including engaging patrols, carriers, spying, escorting and more. You can only visit the friendly sector of Sapphire in the demo, while locations with other reputations will have different missions.

Thanks for the answers. The fuel dropping happens whenever I am docked anywhere. My first few attempts involved flying into the docking area around speed 3, then the tractor beam takes over and the inv screen pops up. At this time the fuel always drops, about 1 unit every couple of seconds. So by the time I've messed around with my ship design I've lost about 50-odd units.
The instructions mention cutting thrust when you dock, so I tried that... and if I hit backspace the moment the tractor beam takes over then I see my thrust cut to zero but the fuel still drips away. I've even tried docking, hitting F3 to close the inv screen, hitting backspace to stop, then hitting F3 again and the fuel still drips away. I'd just like to know if I'm doing something wrong here, or whether this is a "feature".
I'm mostly able to get back to the same city on a planet after a retrieval mission, but if I forget which one I took the mission from then I'm in a pickle! It would certainly be easier if the contract set the nav point back to the original station after you'd completed some or all of it. Knowing this game it probably does but I never noticed it. I'll try it again.

Your fuel won't burn while you are in the shipyard, so your fuel is safe there. What control mode are you using? If it's a gamepad or joystick, the throttle may still be active, so hitting backspace wouldn't stop the engines from firing since throttle is bound to an axis channel. Also, an axis may be bound to lateral or vertical thrusters, causing fuel burn. Make sure your direction box on the HUD is centered with the gunsight. Press the space bar instead of backspace when you dock. This will shut off all automatic thruster controls. If you notice your direction indicator gradually drift off to one side, then the game is receiving an input signal for lateral or vertical thrusters. Are you hovering at a city or is this docking with a space station?

I'm using the mouse, with the default setup so I haven't tweaked anything. I did notice at times that my ship is moving while I'm docked (inching towards the other side of the station). There's no joystick plugged in, but I do have various USB dongles attached for other bits of software (eg. Edius dongle, Korg dongle) - might those be doing mischievous things?
If there's spurious input coming in on a channel, can I bind that to something else and so eliminate that input?
This happens incidentally on both space stations and cities. I'll reinstall the demo and experiment a bit more, see if I can eliminate it by turning off IDS etc.

I doubt the other USB devices would be inputting a signal, especially if you're on a mouse flight control mode since it ignores other devices when it's set to that mode. When you do drift, note what your 'Set' value is on the lower left display and compare that to the 'Vel' value.

Ok, new game, docked with station above Sapphire. I hit Backspace at the moment the ship started to dock, both SET and VEL values at zero, no fuel loss. Great so far.
Then I set off towards Sapphire's main city. I did the same thing there, docked and hit Backspace. Both SET and VEL are at zero. However, my fuel continues to tick down slowly - one unit every few seconds. So I hit F3 to leave the INV console, hit backspace, and my fuel continues to tick down even though I'm now hovering. I hit SPACE to turn off IDS and the display registers INERTIAL... and still my fuel is going down!
At this point I then accidentally hit F2 instead of F3 and... erm... blew up. Whoops. Time to remap THAT key!

Right, I think I'm starting to figure this out. I can't seem to reproduce the fuel loss while docked in space stations anymore, so the only explanation for that is that I wasn't at zero velocity. However, there is definitely fuel loss when I dock at the city on Sapphire. Given that I'm hovering it makes sense, but it does mean that I have to be a bit quicker browsing while docked at a city.

Ok, I've taken the plunge and bought it. This is certainly a project worth supporting, not to mention the fact that it's turning into a very fun game.

Docked at the city on sapphire... i lost fuel.
Strange thing: when i load my savegame (already docked) my ship turns (dont know the correct english word) around. Inertial is on, speed = 0, backspace was pressed.
Quick addition: I can hear the sound of the engine.
