Boys will be boys - ship design

Post by Count Sessine »

Hi all,

You know the pleasure us men get when we buy a new car, just looking at it, kicking tires etc?

Same thing in every single space sim I have ever played. Buy a new ship, take it out for a spin, gawk at the external views, turn it around, check out how the sunlight reflects just so from that surface... That's about half the pleasure of upgrading your ship

In EL we have another, quite ingenious, modular ship building system. The only problem, from a 'kicking tires and gawking' point of view is that the ships look fairly similar.

I think that what I'm trying at here is that in future incarnations of the game I think more dissimilar ship models is rather high on my list, if possible ;)

You ought to see Wasp's twin hull P-38 inspired ship...that one pretty much instantly convinced me that there's more to the construction screen than meets the eye...

Yup, you can position your components on all 3 axis, and scale em to.Can come up with some pretty neat looking ships.

That's very, very good. I expect many a painstaking hour went into getting it to look just right, I'm certainly going to have my work cut out for me!

I like asymmetrical ship designs. In fact, of all the games I've played, I think I like Eve Online ship designs the best by far. When I first played Eve, I was unhappy with the ships. Over time, their unique look grew on me so much that I frown at anything symmetrical these days. One of the kewlest things that Legacy lets me do is make whacky ships.

I've seen some pretty wild designs - gunlike forms, the ship above, bulky, long ships - the shipyard system allows you to do a lot.
