is there anywhere i can go outside of saphire and not get jumped immediately by half a dozen reds? usually within about 60 seconds of jumping into a system, ive got a dozen missiles coming at me and then its game over... i hired some wingmen, but it seems like the ai just ignores them even when theyre attacking, and go right after me...

Hard to do until you change your reputation in SP....in MP your reputation is always in the default mode. I would suggest buying a license at the nearest starport for some protection and upgrading your ship frame and weapons and shields and engines. Do contracts for the Navy, miners and energy to change your system to good....Doing fighting contracts help develop your fighting skills. Use a combination of offense and defense tactics until you find what works best for you. Make as much money as you can in Sapphire before venturing forth. The better ship frames and weapons are in the outer systems.

Check out your system reputation. If you enter an area where you have a 'good' reputation, you'll be fine. If you enter an area with 'moderate' reputation, you will probably be harrassed by the locals. If you enter an area with 'hostile' reputation, you are not allowed to be there and they will view you as kill-on-sight.

The individual faction reputations are only relevant when you're in a 'moderate' or 'hostile' system.

In Evochron Legends you have three ways to deal with being in a system where you aren't entirely welcome:

1. Kill them all.
2. Avoid combat by staying on the move.
3. Do contract work for the local Navy, Energy, and Miners.

One and two are self-explanitory. Three, however, will have a short-term effect of not being attacked much, if at all, depending upon the immediate faction reputations. Of course, the Guild and the Rebels are the 'bad guys' and if you do work for the 'good guys', the 'bad guys' will still attack you.

Now, an interesting twist that Evochron Legends has on the old school space-trader genre is that if you don't allow yourself to be kicked out of a 'moderate' or 'hostile' system and, instead, you stay put and continue to do contracts for the local military or corporations, at some point your system reputation will improve and they won't attack you anymore. It takes a little effort and you can't duck out of the system until it happens, but it's the third option for dealing with reds.

Also, the choice of destination system matters. Thuban, for example, is a hostile hellhole (As you can see on the marquee-banners near the gate station. Hard to see, I'll admit, with all those missiles on your six.). Fauston is borderline hostile; the opposition is pretty badly equipped, but that's cold comfort for someone fresh out of sappire.

I'd suggest heading for the Olympus system first - it's not entirely safe, but the missions sport manageable numbers of bogeys, and it's not carnage central straight out of the jumpgate. They also don't charge docking fees there.

Other than that, practice combat. Maybe go to the online servers and ask the boys for a few pointers on combat, since it's very confusing at first, and the AI ist really trying to kill you (as opposed to providing free cash and colourful lightshows, like they did in the X-Series until recently).

Fly swiftly and carry a well-stocked missile rack.

not on my dynamic server!
(though you need to be in a clan.....)

Olympus is a good choice for a first system to visit.
one good trick is to turn your inertial on, and use your afterburner till you reach top speed, you are very unlikely to be a target like that. If you keep at a heading of 0 or 180, then you wont need to steer much. right clicking on stations and jump gates and jumping to them while at a pitch of zero allows you to 'cruise' into/trhough them without turning inertial off.

the first ship you get isnt great for combat, a bit of practice and a better frame, missiles and shield boost will all help you survive in combat.

I do that all the time and just sail right through the jumpgate, once in hostile territory, I quickly set an emergency jump away from everything, and then get my bearing as to where I want to go.

Olympus is the best way to go if you're new, indeed :).

I would have to agree...Olympus would be a better start. But you will learn quickly how to fight and defend yourself and then you will not even worry about the pesky reds...Also turn IDS off as you go through the jump gate and open your nav map when you arrive in the system you want and just left click somewhere so you have an escape route...if you start to get swarmed just use F2 to jump to safety.

thanks for the tips... ive been mining in olympus between missions for the navy and energy, and ive got my rating for everyone above 60... so i dont get randomly gang-banged quite as much as i used to, which is nice. i also managed to save up about 2.5 mil so i could get a new ship... whats the minimum shield class i should consider? and how much of a fuel tank do i need? ive got 800 units now which seems like plenty...

Oh, yes... when you hire wingmen, don't forget to tell them to attack. There's a key command for it. Just in case you didn't know.

The thirstier your engine gets the more fuel you'll need. Keep that in mind.

2.5 millions are chump change when in Olympus. Stack up on anti-matter fuel cells (one of the planets in Olympus has an E-type economy, meaning they produce fuel cells). Visit one of the two constructor stations once you have a full stack of 25. I'm sure you'll figure out what to do next.

As for the ship, depends on what you're planning to do. You can get a fighter type ship rather cheaply at the carrier in the Erato system, which is fast and sports a class 10 shield. if you pull a few missions for them, you can get the bigger version pretty quickly, which is even faster and better armored. In your price class, I suggest a striker or phoenix frame, though, as those make great allrounders.

In a normal ship, you'll want a class 7 or better, and the biggest shield battery you can get. (Oh, and while you're shipping those antimatter cells to the constructor, grab a stack of hydrogen fuel cells, too and tell them Blackthorne sent you. ;))

If you want to mine/trade, you'll find 800 units of fuel usually sufficient. If you want to fight, you might get by with 400, as you'll usually dock after a sortie. If you want to explore, 1200+ sounds like a good idea. If you manage to fit a fuel converter, you can mooch fuel off stars and nebulae, but it takes AGES to fill'er up.
