Welcome aboard Merli....

1. Cargo pick up and delivery or Cargo identify contracts: when you jump to the nav point look for a purple blip to show up on radar and head towards it. fly close enough to pick it up with a mining/ tractor beam or to identify it depending on which contract you have.

2. Cannons are good for taking out asteroids...lasers can't. but using both lasers and cannons against hostile ships is good.

3. Thuban is a good area to practice fighting.....As far as training: You can hook up with me online in MP if you see me and I will be glad to help teach you....Eclipse is another pilot who enjoys teaching also and Shewter....there are quite a few others also that will help if you ask. Also you can look and read up on tactics in the Tactics thread or in my thread: "Yodas fighter pilot training school".

If you have anymore questions just post them here in the Forum....."Good Flying" ;)

Yes, I suggest you take some lesson from Yoda's.
Really works!!! (%100)...

Then at the end of the lessons, destroy everything and leave!!!

1. It is usually best to trade, mine and do contracts to build up your credits to purchase the larger ship frames that have more hard points and Armor and assembly points. A Hunter frame is a good all around ship frame to fly and fight with. The better ship frames are located in the systems that are farther away from Sapphire. Pay attention to crew you have hired and follow their instructions when they spot containers in the area....the container will show up as a purple dot on your radar, follow it and use your tractor/mining beam to load up your cargo bays to sell the items at the nearest starport for a clear profit. save the location of the containers to your map log.

2. Practice fighting one on one with a hostile until you get a better feel for flying and fighting. then take on contracts with 4 hostiles at the most. when you first jump to the nav for a fight with a hostile contract with 4 or more fighters turn your IDS off and target the nearest ship and fire off a missile as you pass....turn around flying backwards and continue fighting and fire off more missiles to take out as many of the hostiles as you can with missiles....then charge forth once you have reduced their numbers...less is best when going head to head with them. Always adjust your shields as you take fire...the arrow keys on the numpad will direct energy to which shield you need to reinforce as it takes fire. Shield management is a must when fighting.....increasing energy to the shields is possible by using the left Bracket key [....and the right bracket key ] will increase energy to weapons fire. Practice makes perfect....be aggressive and cunning as you fly against a Hostile...being passive will most times cause you to end up as space dust.....

Dear Merli, You keep dying because you are not ready for combat. There are better ships to buy, better weapons to buy and better skills to acquire.
Right now the "Reds" are a nuisance and a threat.
Later, as you progress, they may still be a nuisance, but "boring" in their attacks!

Merli,

I am relatively new to the game too (started playing ~ 5 Jan). The game IS challenging and daunting to newcomers at first.

One thing that I did though recently; after advancing in the game quite a bit, to the "best, heaviest ship frame", I STARTED OVER with a new pilot (same callsign, but started from scratch). I applied what I had learned.

In just a TALON, I pacified Olympus system from "Fair" to "Good", pacified two more Fair systems, a Moderate system, and finally a Hostile system before I upgraded to a new frame (it is VERY possible to win and survive in a Talon, just a lot of work). I've decided that the Phoenix is my favorite ship now. Everyone will have their own playing style and favored loadouts.

Technical upgrades are fine. But there are two subtle, conceptual things that you can think about, benefit greatly from, and transform you into a better pilot : "Situational Awareness" and "Aggressiveness". Anyone can tell you their take on exactly what those mean, but to get the most benefit, research it, absorb it, develop your own take on it.

Then experiment a lot, and criticize your own performance. What are you doing that is RIGHT for you, and what ISN'T working.

There are several MP servers for people to play on, if you have issues with one server it might be worth trying another one, they are situated in different locations so this can help with high pings, lag and other issues.

Those two other servers ('Slammers' and 'Rogue') are always empty. No MP'ing going on.

(edit)
And it is not me who has an issue with the server. And what issue there is was not really started by me, nor was I the one that violated the Board Rules.

you know I ran the first long-term 24/7 server for the evochron series of games, and I've also ran many other online games ( trackmania/ CS /CS:s /hl2dm/ MW4:mercs ) and it always amazes me. you know if no-one is on then no-one will join, what sort of a silly catch22 is that? Simply joining a game will ensure that someone else will join at some point.

In all fairness, I will try that again tonight. Maybe before (for the past few days) I just didn't hang out on the other two servers long enough (Each time, I stayed maybe 10-15 minutes, total - occasionally exiting to look at the status of the other servers). I will try staying on for at least an hour or two.

Thanks for the suggestion. I hung out on the 'Rogue Server' for about 35-40 minutes or so, and Shewter showed up, then IckleChesh. We did several contracts... had a lot of fun (a 'BLAST' you could say). Shewter gave me some good advice on weapons configuration - VALUABLE, because my current loadout was based on a small misconception (occasionally fatal). The update rate on that server was very good, performance was smooth. I'm still new at this, so I don't have a basis for comparison; but didn't notice any stuttering, and the update rate seem to hold below 300 most of the time.

Usually I keep a "retired persons hours" (that is, no set hours at all). In an international community, this won't matter though.
:)

Yesterday I found Shewter and IckleChesh on Rogue at about 17:45 my time, which would have been 23:45 GMT. It was late for IckleChesh - midnightish, so he couldn't stay long.

(edit)
Its not unusual for me to be up playing in SP at 3 AM (my time), or about 1 PM (19:00 GMT)... AFTER I have optimized my caffiene to hemoglobin ratio.

Well I've learned a shortcut to getting some quick cash. Once you get a mining/tractor beam go get some extra cargo space and mine a load full of Plat. Then make a quick jump to Lamda sector and fulcrum to the nearest spacestation(this is risky make sure you save before entering Lamda), dock and sell..look for any ship upgrades you need and jump back to the gate and into Saphire asap. You'll get much more for your plat in Lamda but many reds ships are possible. I have found that if I save a good set of jump points I can out run hostiles and get in/out of Lamda with out getting hit. Also, you'll be able to find better gear for your ship there. Then once your better equipped you can start working on your Faction and make it a safer trip!
