LOOOOL...
My connection dropped and I never finished this message!
I have a ventrilo server that folks can use for DS9!
IP - zinc.typefrag.com
Port- 62653
There is no password at this time...
All you need is to download the ventrilo program and have a microphone (I have a headset)...
The server is up and running 24/7...feel free to jump on and chat with your fellow pilots!
Mad!
PS..I am trying to figure out how to create more channels in there...we just have the one atm...would be nice for team play...you don't need the guys you are trying to kill hearing your plans!
Hope to hear some voices on there!

If you solve Multiple channel thing, please share us Madness.
I hate typing, and I will try a solution for communication.
Other option is Teamspeak If I am not wrong.
I installed the software called Teamspeak but could't use it.
I will check it out and try to connect to you soon with my headset!!!
I am going to live another "first" in this game

There are a fair few of us that use TS with no problems. We (NS) have also been able to create a separate channel and since its password protected and you can set the max nunmber of users it effectively becomes secure. IckleChesh and I use it all the time and I know that Shewter has used it. More than happy to help a NS brother in arms, so that we have a secure channel to talk on. I hate typing as well!!! Hard to type, fly and fight all at the same time!!!

I've joined the TS channel a few times as well, spoken to Eclipse on it too, I've not installed it on this machine, but I'm going to, I often run it 'as standard prep" before going into MP.Originally posted by PingBosun

Cool...
I thought that the TS sever was down...Eclipse gave me the info for the TS at 1 point but when I tried to connect, it said the server was not there.
I have TS and Vent loaded...I prefer the sound quality on Vent...
Anyway..the server is there..free to use...I will be on it until I grab some TS info and can chat with you all...feel free to d/l Vent and come on!
Good Hunting!

I had an initial problem with TS sound - until I sent the rate to 12.3k rather than 6.1k
Now it seems like IckleChesh is sat next to me - unfortunately!!!

I have a specific question about TS.... and general advice would be appreciated.
Specific question: Is it known for certain that TS is Vista *64* compatible? The TS website says "Vista compatible", but there is a hidden "gotcha" that rears its ugly head sometimes w/ Vista 64.
===== =====
General:
.... my background = NADA. I've never used it, and until ER I had not had much experience at all with MP games, or interest in TS. I "had heard" of TeamSpeak occasionally (I forget where - television commercials a few years ago maybe)... other than that the only reference I remember was a certain SouthPark episode (the "World of Warcraft" episode).
I hit the TS website... read the FAQ, systems requirements, etc. (and "Vista Compatible" - but does that include 64 bit Vista?) So now I understand that downloading the TS 2.0 client is free to use... and paid licensing is only necessary if one is going to run a TS server (correct me if I am wrong?)
I do not have a discrete soundcard - it's all on the motherboard. Very high quality though (ASUS M2N32-SLI Deluxe, with the associated audio hardware and SoundMAX). This includes a highly directional beam microphone array (sitting on top of my monitor).
First thing that leapt out at me from the TS site was "full duplex soundcard". I know what that means from back when I had earlier vintage hardware / soundblaster cards. In amateur radio applications, using full duplex and DSP in soundblaster cards, I used them to send/recv fax and slow-scan television over the radio.
I just did an experiment. From PingBosun's post (~ 12k), I set the sample rate for the mic at 16k (the next step down was 11.025k, I realize that the TS software might use different settings). Experimented, set the input volume to 70%. Made sure that the "Directional Beam" feature was activated. Made sure that background noise filters were on (the computer fans etc.). (I realize that the TS software might not be able to take advantage of these settings).
I started playing a long, loud MP3 in Windows Media Player ("Confusion" by New Order, the remix used in the movie "Blade"). Turned the volume WAY UP.
Activated Sound Recorder, and started recording WITH the music playing in the background. Spoke in "fairly low tone" (testing 1 2 3 bla bla bla). Then a "normal tone", then I "yelled at the microphone".
Shut down the music and listened to my recording.
I could BARELY hear the music in the background. Imagine you are living in an apartment, a "flat", maybe the third floor, and a nightclub is on the ground floor and two buildings down.... and muffled, as through a wall. But my voice was crystal clear. No echos. No feedback.
This indicates that I wouldn't need to get any more hardware (headset/mic), and that full duplex operation is working correctly.

I know from ts, that this is an issue with voice systems,
There will be some obsuce setting somewhere.
to my knowledge systems are either vista compatabile of not, there is not x86( in vista x32 - which really makes more sense - the x86 comes from old intel terminology and is not really applicable [imho])/x64 difference ( note: some stuff is x64 only, but if its x86 then it will work in x64)
Sound compatability is a big issue in vista, uptill now sounds could be software or hardware (and for good reason), but now the power, muscle and memory we have available I agree with the descision - to an extent ( some backward compatability please, pc used to be short for ibm compatable pc - and even xp could run damn near everything you threw at it, sometimes with a couple of internal settings adjusted)

Maybe I will just give it a shot... but I hesitate to even install the client unless someone with a Vista64 has already tried.
I've been "burned" a couple of times with some apps, in one I had to do major surgery on my registry AFTER the thing was uninstalled. Had to reset and readjust a lot of things. (Admittedly, it was rather 'exotic' software that had to do with an amateur radio app... did some crazy things).

Vista is the main reason I am not going to buy a new machine. OK if you re-install, all the upgrades are a pain, but with Broadband it aint too bad.
Lots of articles imply that users are reverting back to XP!
So is Vista going to work properly?

The best known update for Vista is... XP!

Like all new operating systems after Microsoft first released them, Vista had it's problems.
I admit that it STILL has "a problem" when you try to install and run older apps/games.
Some manufacturers still haven't been able to craft software (especially hardware drivers) that work properly under Vista, because they can't / won't update their compilers, or learn to use those compilers for target Vista machines.
Some people (NOT me, I just see this in other forums) have gotten pretty good at tweaking compatibility settings and so forth, and getting older games to run. I see posts such as "FINALLY - got IW2:EOC to run under Vista!".... and then a lot of people will copy down the procedure, try it, and thank the individual with "Works Great!".
XP is NOT "an update for Vista".
"They" (many people in the gaming and other computer related communities) said the same thing about W98 (at first) when it was first released. "Swollen, Bloated and Slow" was the comment that I remember most.
Vista was badmouthed at first - a LOT - by arguably everyone talking about it. Then the comments started changing to "not bad, when you learn how to use it".
Eventually, Microsoft will drop support for XP. Fact of life. There will come a time... soon (if it hasn't already happened) when it will be close to impossible to buy a new computer with XP on it. You currently CANNOT find (as far as I know) a new computer with WinME, WIN98SE, or W98 on it.
When I purchased my computer in 2007, the best options available to me at the time (custom computer / hardware wise) ONLY offered Vista, I don't know the reasons, maybe they thought they were being "progressive".

Still, reverting to XP will solve all gaming problems caused by Vista.
Of course, the Vista is more game friendly now that many of the bugs have been fixed and authors have had time to work with it and "proof" their games on it.
Still, there's a lot of older, popoular games that Vista won't allow you to play.
And by your own admission it refuses to allow the use of the Saitek controller.
Reverting back to XP solves those problems and many others.
I can't say how long MS will or will not support XP, but I imagine it will be for at least a few more years. I use a Win98SE, among others, and I haven't had a problem finding support for it.
Actually, it's pretty much up to the user and depends more on what they want to do with the PC!

I did not say that Vista "refuses to allow the use of the Saitek controller". I said that Saitek software was having problems under Vista64.
I've since tweaked things, and followed the advice of someone from the Saitek forum. By falling back to an earlier version of the SST, and the current version of the Saitek X52 Pro and GM3200 gaming mouse drivers... AND tweaking a couple of things, it is working pretty good now. I have been running it well since about the 22nd of January. That's been posted.
It still has an annoying characteristic of imposing slow (about 1 -2 minutes) restarts or shutdowns of the OS (Vista 64).... WHEN the profiler has been activated ... that's why I posted a procedure on how to NOT automatically load the Saitek stuff on startup (which is the default, when you install the SST). Thats all been posted.
The slow restarts / shutdowns are a known issue. Saitek says that it is an issue with the mouse driver, and how it interacts with the SST (whether or not you even invoke the GM3200 in an SST profile). Saitek claimed to have fixed it (when it wasn't) - all of this IS IN THEIR forum. I posted that here as well.
"Actually, it's pretty much up to the user and depends more on what they want to do with the PC!" - yes, my question is will TeamSpeak work (well) on a Vista 64 system. Are there any problems / pitfalls.

So to get back on target, I'd like to hear if anyone has tried the TeamSpeak software under Vista64. Did you have problems with it? Did you find solutions?
(edit) Does the hardware setup I described (Beam Mic versus Headset/Mic) sound usable, considering the test that I did - from the viewpoint of people that use TeamSpeak?
- Thanks
