Pearl Default Rep

Post by Storm »

Not a bug (per se), but possibly a discrepency.

In SP, I just jumped into Pearl for the first time.

The Strategy Guide shows 5 hostile systems (in CHARTED space) - Vonari, Sierra, Aries, Thuban, Pearl.

But Pearl was "Good" when I jumped in.

Either the Strategy Guide has in incorrect map (probably because it was decided differently after publishing the StratGuide), or the universedata.txt file has a glitch.

(edit)

It does NOT appear to be the same problem that existed with Virgo in test update (1.988) two:

' ******************************************* Pearl system

-Local Nebula Backdrop And Reputation
NebBackXLow=2001
NebBackXHigh=4000
NebBackYLow=-100
NebBackYHigh=100
NebBackZLow=-2500
NebBackZHigh=-1000
NebBackText=3
ReputationID=20
Reputation=3
-EndNebBack

(edit again) wait just noticed that rep = 3 (hostile) so yes something is glitched.

(shrug) dunno.
I just looked at the entire block for Pearl, nothing leapt out at me.

With 1.988 official, Virgo WAS corrected.

I pacified Lost Rucker, Rucker, Virgo and Thuban (my first hostile system), and Pices OK (in addition to systems to the NorthEast). So I know that Hostile systems are "working correctly", but for some reason Pearl = Good in my SP game.

Since I just turned Pices from Fair to Good, and jumped from Pices to Pearl, it looks like Pearl is "inheriting" the rep from Pices.
(note : I DID NOT save my game after noticing this - my last save was in Pices)

I travelled from Pices to Sapphire... then did some Beacon Quest work. Went through Lambda, Emerald, Rigel, Sirius, back through Rigel to Emerald; all system reputations were normal and what was expected.

... just completed the beacon quest. The last part was confusing, and I didn't "stop and smell the roses" and explore as much as a COULD HAVE... I found Sol system and docked at a few stations there; and successfully came back (to the Evochron Universe area) but not Vonari Space... I assume Vonari Space is accessable from Rift Space, I just didn't stumble upon the access *or take the time to find it* (low on fuel, hostiles after me).

ANYWAY I *did* take note of all systems I passed through. the default system reps for each system was as-expected.

Thanks for the sending the profile, that's what I needed to pin down the problem. Turns out, it was an overlap issue within the universe data file (Lost Rucker specifically). Since you had a saved global rep for that system, it overlapped into Pearl because of the low SX value. It's been corrected and you can now download it from the game's website:

No change was needed for the client binary, so if you'd like me to send you just the universe data file with the needed changes, let me know.

Vice,

Thanks, really appreciate it.

No need, its no trouble for me (I downloaded the installer already a few seconds ago, and it's no trouble to install).

Everyone here should chip in and buy you a shiny hat.

I've been a real coffee connoisseur for a long time - I mean REALLY into it.

If caffiene is the *main* goal (and there is no reason why it shouldn't be, if occasion warrants), BUT you want GOOD coffee (not instant, though instant IS high in caffiene - that is its one purpose, its one saving grace), then the "Cold Press" method is the way to go. I've never made it myself, but I had a friend (another coffee junky) who used to make cold-press coffee. If you use good beans / grounds... makes a THICK, syrupy concentrate that you can store in the refridgerator - for weeks, if you want, before it goes bad. Then, there are several ways to use & serve it. Or just drink it straight, for that nice, "nuclear I'm glowing in the dark" feeling.

(edit) You can look up "cold press coffee" on the web, the kits are fairly inexpensive.

A re-install worked just fine, Pearl was red and angry as it should be.

(You need a team of patient elves to periodically check the universedata.txt file as it is updated - I would agree that it is a difficult thing to proofread)

I am about to do something, some players might say "are you nutz?!??"

I am going to start over. From scratch. AFTER I try one more thing. As I indicated, at the end of the Beacon Quest, I was kind of "feverish"... wanted to "get it done". Didn't stop and "look around" in a certain place, went directly to Sol system before I "breathed easy".

Okay, so while I still have my well equipped Leviathan, I am going to check out Vonari space. I examined ... "things" ... and I think I have a grip on "what is going on" in "a certain place".

So I just want to check out the Vonari (probably running a LOT all the while)... and see a couple of the sights.

Then I will start all over again with the Talon.
(edit) (and yes, what I mean is to start over with a new profile)

At some point I was "burning with curiosity" about "a certain action in a certain place that could make the player filthy rich". It did not ruin the game for me, I developed (REALLY developed) as a pilot after that. But I think I did miss out on slower-paced, sedate adventuring. Another thing that I SHOULD have done EARLIER in the game was to hire crew. I didn't do that until later. There are other little things that I would do differently now too.

If people see me in MP with just a Talon or a Pulsar... be nice!!!

.... and one more thing...

Successfully jumped my first Black Hole! Hehehe.
Basically used a method that Wasp89 outlined in some older thread.

His specific values didn't quite work out for me.

But I played around and experimented, and I think I've come up with a (slight) variation of the method that SEEMS to work every time. And you can jump in from quite a distance away (60-100 Km).

Nope not nuts, I've done it at least once with every evochron game, some of the best piltos I know do it regularly, and for several reasons.

1. its too easy too use a cheat or your knowledge and get a huge sum of cash quickly, its worth exploring all the method to make cash, it forces you to learn skills you need.

2. combat in a smaller ship is harder, its just too easy flying about in a hulking great leviathan with an excalibre pack, try flying about in a talon with barely enough cash to buy 2 moxe echelons.

3. Reaction times need to be faster in a smaller ship, the more you fly in one the better you'll be at combat.

Simply put, the best pilots can take out a capital ship in a talon ( without missiles, and without using the old 'hide behind the engines technique), can fly and extended combat run against the vonari, and generally have a better nowledge of the game and universe. Sure you need to have a ship in a fixed range for PvP, but flying about in a talon gives you the skills you need.

I suspect that legends will 'up the playing field' simply due to the amount of work that pilots will have to put in to progress to a good combat ship..
