Tend to die when...

Post by Graven »

More often than not when I go boom it is because a missile smacked into my ship when I was changing direction.

I find that I waste all my fuel changing direction too and spend log periods of time fighting inertia to slow myself down and get back to the fight I am trying to have.

Needless to say, spending time decelerating then accelerating to get back to the fray can be frustrating for me.

Am I doing anything wrong? Or is as I have always thought, its just part of the mechanics.

It is normal as for every action there is an equal and opposite reaction, or something like that (lol). This Sim has realistic motion dynamics. Practice will improve your game. You should turn your INS on when facing the direction you want and use your after burners fully. Turn it off when you reach the speed you want. Not a fuel saver but quicker. Others may have better ideas than those. Good flying 2 U.

Perhaps just a little bit of both, although it's difficult for me to say for certain without watching your tactics in person. Likely, you are occasionally making excessively sharp turns, which are slowing you down too much, making you an easy target and giving your countermeasures less time to be effective against the missiles. For an initial recommendation, try widening your turns. Watch your forward speed gauge and try not to let it drop below about 80% of full speed. If it drops too low, slow your turn until your speed recovers. When and if you have the fuel, then use the afterburner before you make a sharp turn and during to help keep your speed high and use inertial thrusters manually to double up on the counter force applied during a turn. Your intertial thrusters are on 'fuel save' mode while the IDS is on, so they do not operate at full power until you manually input more.

I simpy turn my ship 180 degree's then hit full throttle and afterburner just as I turn IDS on, sends me flying down to 0 in less then a second

Personally, in evasive flight I tend to describe rather wide turns, while in combat flight I usually use a 30 degree approach towards my target, then do a 180 degree flip.

in an evasive fight i pick a direction, then fly backwards at a speed which stretches out the opposition as they chase me. just slow enough for them to catch me. you then get to easily pick them off, shoot incoming missiles, and generally have a real easy time of it. if you need to do evasive manouvers then directional manouvering thrusters can change your velocity as quick as afterburners. then if you want to go take out the target (eg capital ship) you can do so at your leisure.
its just my opinion and my style, but it seems safer than trying to dogfight in the middle of nine hostiles.
