First with the request: which station flogs a Leviathan ship? Any station flogging a better than a Fulcrum 5 drive?
Now for the tips: Want to make money? Yep? In the Sapphire system, head out to one of the asteroid fields, and start harvesting Platinum. It takes about 15 minutes to fully load all 5 cargo bays with Platinum - you do have 5 cargo bays?? Anyway, as you've probably noticed your cargo beams picks up all three commodities, Platinum, metal, and diamonds. Let all of your cargo bays fill up to their 25 unit capacity, then pick one of the non-platinum bays and left click it, keep left clicking until it starts to take platinum. This is the important bit,let that bay fill up, then pick your next non-platinum bay, and so the same until all 5 bays are filled with platinum.
Now to make the money. Fly to Rivoch station, it's on the bottom left of your nav screen. You'll find that the platinum flogs off for between 800,000, and 440,000 - that gives you something between 5m and 2.5m a turn.
Now build up your money before going off exploring. You want at least 50m credits, 100m, if you have the patience, 'cos it's darn boring. If you want to update your ship, and you should, Pearl is the place to do it. I updated to a Centurion, a class 14 cannon, and a class 4 laser.
Another thing: when you use your inertial (hit the space bar) you are not using any fuel!!!! Also, increase you speed to over 2500 and missiles can't catch you up.
When approaching a station, don't bother trying to manoeuvre to find the docking bay, fly straight at the station and it'll twist around to present the docking bay, you won't crash into the station. Also, you can jump straight out of a station, just make sure that the nose of your ship is pointing out at space.
Btw, does anyone know the point of this game? What are you supposed to achieve??

Follow the beacons......Btw, does anyone know the point of this game? What are you supposed to achieve??
Achieve? Well That depends on you, Riches? Fame? Exploration? choose your own goals ( How about defending Evochron from an alien menace? or Developing your own extreme manouvers like jumping through a black hole, or into a asteroid cave.). I think most pilots here on the forums consider the zenith of the game to become a good PvP pilot. I've been playing the Evochron series for over 3 years, and I'm considered one of the better pilots in the game, and I still find challenges.
If your looking for something more story based, Arvoch might be more your thing, but Evochron allows you to do whatever you wish.
A good list of tips btw, its a concise list of basic tips that would be useful to many new pilots.
Lastly 100Mil is not that much, most pilots consider themselves well off at around a Bil, some go rather higher than that, but when you get to the point of buying Fulcrum torpedos 100mil wont seem so much

Welcome aboard.....there is a better jump drive that is the Mantis jump drive and it is experimental. also head to the Rucker system and look for the hidden jump gate to "Lost Rucker" you will find better ships, weapons and jump drives there. the jump gate will show up on your radar as a purple blip when you are less then 10,000 away from it.....The Beacon Quest is the main Objective here....watch the intro to the game and you will notice that it gives a clue to where to find the first beacon......Good HuntingOriginally posted by Ravenfeeder

Thanks for the info, follow the beacons - yep, got it.
Ye Gods and little fishes - 1Bn!!! I'd go mental jumping to an asteroid field and back to Rivoch enough times to build up that sort of float - I've got a low boredom level.
As you might have guessed, I've just started on this game, about a month, and a bit, only racked up 130 kills, so far. So, any tips would be welcomed.
Cheers

Thanks for the Rucker tip, I'll head on over there now.
I found the first beacon, on Saphire, and haven't bothered looking for any more, yet, but will do.
Again, thanks, much appreciated.

Well. I've wandered around Rucker for about 5 hours, and, finally, found a wormhole, belted through it, and I've been wandering around in lots of nothing for the last three hours - any way out of here??

Assuming it's the same wormhole I found there...
Bring up the Navmap and check the nearest system. It'll be quite a few jumps back home, I'm afraid. Hope you have enough fuel left.

Hi Raven....
I sent you some more hints via u2u.....the jump point to lost Rucker is through a Hidden Jump Gate...not a worm hole.

There's darn all showing on the nav map. And fuel is getting low. I've starte up a new pilot profile to get to the wormhole, go through it, and get the co-ordinates to get my orginal ship back out of the big zero.Originally posted by BraveHart

there is an asteroid field not far fomr pearl that give nothing but platinum, and if you sell that plat at oasis youll be making between 2-3 mill per 25 units in other words aprox 10 to 15 mill per trip if you have a 5 bar bay

Spent quite a while zapping around the big nothing that is beyond that wormhole, bound to be something there, just that I never found it.
I started up another pilot, to get to the wormhole, and beyond, to find some co-ordinates to steer towards. Darn programme went weird, doesn't show any gates, anywhere"
Back to the drawing board. I'm reluctant to start over again, hate to lose my 148 kills. Light bulb over the head moment. Got on to my map log, and, fortunately, I had a stored reference to a asteroid field in Rucker. Hit the co-ordinates, and went on autopilot. I noted in which direction the green indicator pointed and started a series of jumps, reinserting the map co-ors after each jump.
Finally -whooppee! An asteroid field showed up, zotted off there muy pronto, and then into a station, fuel up - whew!
Next, found the Rucker hidden station, got my brand new Lev.. errr, cough, cough, splutter, big fish, ship, and some heavier weapons. And, found out that the asteroids around the station are pure platinum! Also got the Mattis drive - wonder if it'll let me jump between systems.
Stuffing myself with the platinum, at the moment, get a couple of those stealth missiles. I wonder if they'll shield me from everyone, or just the ship that they're aimed at!! Probably the latter.
Just a though, for the programmer. It would be handy to have a screen coming up giving the opportunity to use a selected missile - my Alt key doesn't release the mouse cursor.

Not quite sure what you're referring to with 'use' a selected missile with a screen. To fire it, you use the secondary weapon key or button. To select a missile, you use the secondary weapon selection keys, default ; and '.Just a though, for the programmer. It would be handy to have a screen coming up giving the opportunity to use a selected missile - my Alt key doesn't release the mouse cursor.
The alt key won't release the mouse cursor in the Mouse Direction flight control modes as it literally uses the mouse as a joystick for control. Switch to the Mouse Point flight control mode and then the cursor will appear along with alt disabling flight control for that pointer.
Edit: Woops, thanks Storm! lol, too many sleepless nights working I guess...

Thanks Eclipse, saves me finding out the hard way. I've dumped my "Stealth" missiles, and installed the "Excalibar" - haven't a clue what it does, presumably it replicates itself so many times - I hope so!
Mind, I hardly ever use the missiles. I just pick out the nearest Red and head straight at it, shoot down any missiles it bungs at me, and then blast it out with superior fire power, I've now got the Fusion, and Banshee, main weapons, If the Reds start ganging up on me, I just switch on the afterburners and scoot the hell out of it. A system we used in the forces called "Shoot and scoot" - worked in real life!

(Vice) a minor correction; just saw this right away and I've been using it a lot (experimenting with EVERY key);
] and [ rebalance power between weapons, shields - you get an indication in your cockpit in the lower left VDU.
' selects next secondary weapon (missile)
; selects previous missile
N cycles between full primary (laser + cannon) to just laser, to just cannon, to back to full (I forget the exact sequence though).
(Ravenfeeder) yes us oldtimers get crabby.
Me = crab sometimes.
Ravenfeeder - I find that having fun with a peculiar attitude + experimenting helps. You start flying better, and fighting better. You can always load the game with an "arcade" mentality - KNOWING you will die and save without exiting - but in the meantime blow stuff up, and improve your technique.
If you are familiar with the movie Serenity, think of the scene with that character "Wash"; the pilot; when he said "I am a leaf on the wind!"

Info for "Newbies", or for "Oldies" that just play the game without noticing numbers and stats.
NavMap:
In the NavMap, each MAJOR grid square (bounded by CYAN lines) is 200Km x 200Km.
Drives:
With your Fulcrum Drive, you can jump your max distance for it with ALT-F2 (in a straight line, where your ship is currently aimed, regardless of your set desination).
A Fulcrum 1 Drive can jump up to 1 grid square, or 200Km (tested and confirmed).
A Fulcrum 2 Drive can jump up to 2 grid squares, or 400Km (tested and confirmed).
I am *assuming* that Fulcrum 3,4,5 Drives follow the same pattern, so Fulcrum 5 = 1000Km.
The strategy guide confirms this, but I didn't specifically measure them while I had the Fulcrum 3,4,5 drives, and I didn't specifically test them myself.
The Mantis Drive jumps up to 10 grid squares, or 2000Km (tested and confirmed).
Testing was done at Sapphire once I had a Mantis Drive, selling the Mantis for Fulcrum 1/2, doing the test, then exiting-without-saving. Then I tested the Mantis. Test was done by locating my ship to EXACTLY SX = 1, SY = 0, SZ = 0, x = 0, y = 0, z = 0, (SX 0 would have been on top of Evochron Station), setting a destination of SX = 10000, aiming at it and jumping the max distance for the drive; and then examining current coords in the NavMap.

Sorry about this, I apologize in advance because it kind of falls under the definition of "cross posting".
I created a topic "Pearl Default Rep"
http://www.starwraith.com/forum/viewtopic.php?t=3947
.... with ~40 views so far, and no replies. I could U2U Vice, but I imagine he is very busy, or maybe just missed the post. Maybe he is working on the problem (IF there is one...)
Bottom line (first) question: What is the default system rep for Pearl SUPPOSED to be?
Its kind of frustrating because I DON'T (CAN'T) save my game *while in* PEARL.... if I understand the game correctly, that global rep of "Good" would be saved at that point. AND if I understand one of the Strategy Guide maps, and universedata.txt correctly, Pearl SHOULD BE hostile.
Apparantly it ISN'T saved (Pearl System Rep) after a "just passing through" flyby... IF you don't save while IN Pearl.
Conclusion reached because:
After the second 1.988 Test Build Two was released, I noticed that Virgo system had the wrong default rep (Hostile instead of Fair), I passed through it a couple of times and it was Hostile instead of Fair like it should have been, I *never saved in Virgo but DID pass through it a couple of times*, and with 1.988 final release Virgo was fair the next time I entered the system. I ASSUME that IF I had saved in Virgo DURING 1.988 Test Built Two, then the wrong Virgo default rep (hostile) would have been saved in the game (because "System Rep" = "Global Rep"... semantics).
Now, I examined the universedata.txt file block for Pearl. It DOES indicate that Pearl is supposed to be HOSTILE.
So my second question : How to fix it? I imagine that 1.988 Final is good, all it takes is a new universedata.txt file update. So far I don't see where the problem is though (assuming there is a minor problem).

That is the case, but I have not located the cause in either the system code block or the game itself. The ranges, default value, and code all appear correct and I haven't duplicated yet. Once I can duplicate the same thing, I can usually pin down the cause and fix it..... with ~40 views so far, and no replies. I could U2U Vice, but I imagine he is very busy, or maybe just missed the post. Maybe he is working on the problem (IF there is one...)
Hostile.Bottom line (first) question: What is the default system rep for Pearl SUPPOSED to be?
That's the answer I'm hunting for. I sometimes don't reply until it's either been fixed or a work-around has been established. Pinning this one down seems to be tricky since there's nothing that stands out as the cause and it all seems to be working for me at the moment. So my second question : How to fix it? I imagine that 1.988 Final is good, all it takes is a new universedata.txt file update. So far I don't see where the problem is though (assuming there is a minor problem).
Edit: Oh, if you could send me your pilot profile, that might help further.

Vice,
Thanks and will do. My profile is currently in Sapphire, I will check first by flying from Sapphire -> Thuban -> Pices -> Pearl,
(where I imagine the effect will be reproduced, I've done it already a couple of times... this just makes SURE, and you can follow the same sequence to reproduce it)
BTW I've done nothing in Pearl, taken no contracts there, destroyed no ships.
Will email the profile as soon as I check it out in a couple of minutes.
(edit)

Shortened the trip for you, you are at a StarPort in Pices sitting next to the gate to Pearl; the ship is even AIMED at the gate from the dock.
I verified it - exited after saving (exited to Windows) - reloaded the game, flew to Pearl. Pearl rep = good.
