Okay, I'm still learning this game and have a few (more) questions.
Space, I seem to get to places that I really didn't try to get to. I mean, I'd go through a "jumpgate" to another place. NP. But, getting back or jumping again through another one then trying to get back... forget it. I got to a wormhole (by accident) went through that and got to a Wolf**** (can't remember the name) station. Loved what they offered etc. I jumped through another gate and got totally lost. I ended up having to use an old game save.
I also (thought) I was at this Wolf**** station area and some huge glowing thing was just floating in space. I couldn't get near it or fly through it.
When I put in co-ordinates in like (10000, 0, -10000) they say something like "out of range for the drive". I was just at these co-or's...??
Anyway, I'm now in Cerulean but really don't have a clue how I got there. My fear is I'll end up giving up on this game if I can't figure out how to get around. I love the game but I need to be able to get to places I want to get to. Right now I'm moving aimlessly through space "thinking" I know where I'm at until I see things that weren't there before.
So, is there a "key" I can hit that will tell me where I'm at. I mean, I get a "Welcome to Outpost x" but it doesn't tell me WHERE outpost x is at. What System is it in etc. I only know I'm in Cerulean because a station is named that.
I think I'm working in two dimensions in that, I select my target on the map, hit rear map and re-select it and go on my way. That was it but now I'm getting lost and can't find my way around. I take it that each System isn't flat so a 10x10 system is actually 10x10x10?
Is there a System / Quaderent map available?
I know there is a map with all the System names but even in Sapphire the map shows 7 jumps... I have found 1... and it jumps to a planet and station (if I remember correctly).
All these other jumps to different Systems I can't seem to find.
I realize I just probably confused the [blank] out of you all but it's very frustrating not knowing where I'm at or how to get "home". Or at least not knowing where I'm going.
Also, is there a way of recording the spots you were at. I mean, I found a wormhole and would like to return to it. Instead of writing down the co-or's is there a way to log it?

firstly you can right click on an icon on the nav map to set your jump accuratly to that location ( good for safe jumping to stations/jump-gates/wormholes).
the quadrent map is a rough overview of systems, sapphire itself is make up of several sectors, explore around and you'll find gates/ wormholes in several places ( one sector right. 3 sectors down and left, 3 sectors up -2 right and one vertically up are just a few)
the quadrent map gives sector locations, some secret places are a bit out of the way and it can take several jumps to get back to normal space.
the co-ord system can be confusing. There are 2 sets of coordinates. the first set (xyz) sets your location within a sector, the second ( sx,sy and sz ) denotes the sector you are in.
Items within sectors can be anywhere in 3 dimensional space, to help you can 'flip' the nav map, but you can think of x as east/west z as north/south and y as up/down ( be careful with this, often pilots will refer to north/south as up down). Generally as a rule sectors exist on the galatic eliptic ( sy=0 ) though a couple of systems are out of that, and right clicking wont take you where you want to be, you'll have to put the co-ords in manually)
so time for some healpful hints in builtpoints
1. there is a hitchikers guide to evechron, run a search on the forums for it.
2. the nav map ( default f2) is your friend there are several things you can do to help you.
firstly use your mouse wheel, it'll scroon in /out to a certain extent, giving you a better picture of surrounding sectors
use the text off and 'all' buttons, text off removes the text, and clicking the all button will change to different object types ( stations planets jump points etc) thus making it clearer the datails
jumpgates will list the destination point as part of the above info, and almost always turning round and going straight back through the jump gate will take you back to your starting location.
3. systems can be quite big, often far larger than you can see on your nav map, explore around go find other objects that will appear...
4. when lost or at a hidden/uncharted location look at the quadrent map in the nav map, using that and your current position you can determine the closet charted position. enter the destination position into the nav map. While it'll doubtless be out of reach in one jump you'll be able to see which direction you want to go. This will allow you to use the alt-f2 feature, which can make small work out of even very long journies ( at some point most pilots make journies of over 500 sectors)
5. right clicking on the nav map is your friend. right click on a sector to 'zoom' to that sector. tight click on an object to get your nav map to provide accurate co-ords for that object.
6. navigators. While they will provide you with the confidence to jump around without flying into a planet/star etc, they will also change the choosen co-ords on a regular basis. in Short they are good at the start, but once you know what your doing ditch them.
7. map log. there is a map log in the nav console, it'll add your destination co-ords to the log once you hit the 'add to log button' its very cool, and I have over 20 loactions programmed. it can become cluttered to keep it to the following if you can : uncharted objects, locations of REAL interest, stations you own a licence for ( its easy to forget you own a licence at one station and buy stuff at another nearby station (Doh)

Verb's advice is great, I'll post some additional details below.
You are probably entering sector coordinates instead of in-sector coordinates. Refer to the Navigation Console section in the instructions for a detailed explanation on how the map/navigation system works.When I put in co-ordinates in like (10000, 0, -10000) they say something like "out of range for the drive". When you open the nav console (default F1), the system you are in is displayed at the top left next to 'System:'. Yes, click on 'Quadrant Map' in the navigation console. It's not too useful for precision navigation, but can give you an overview on the general layout of systems.Is there a System / Quaderent map available?
You're probably only looking at one sector in the Sapphire system. Click on Zoom Out or scroll the mouse wheel down to see more of the area you are in. Yes, use the map log. If you are at a location you want to save, click on Set Loc (short for Set Location) to plot a nav point at your current position. Then click on 'Add to Log', type in a description, then press enter. You can then pull up the log and click on an entry to plot a nav point directly to that location in the future.Also, is there a way of recording the spots you were at. I also use a paper based version of the quadrant map, even in space, paper is a very usefull tool!:D. There is a very colourful version in the online help guide that you can print. I have lots of points of interest and also system co-ords handwriten on it for quick reference.
It is a good idea to ave the game if you are going through a wormhole to an unknow destination, as you may well find yourself stuck out in the sticks with not enough fuel to get back (done that!)
If you are in MP, and other pilots are around, just ask for help and I know that anybody will be moe that willing to help you out.

WOW, I had to get out of the game to thank all of you.
Navigation is simple using the method's discribed above (where's the blushing icon). I got back to Sapphire in a flew jumps and I feel a whole new "world" has opened up!
Thanks for all the help and I appoligize for the stupid questions. I guess it did pay off though (getting lost that is) 'cause I have some wonderful weapons that I couldn't find hanging around Sapphire.

I don't play a lot of multiplayer because I'm not a fan of fighting other people, but I keep a physical, paper rudder with points of interest and effective trade routes, best places for mining, weapons configurations as well as maneuverability charts.

Mp isn't just PvP you know, the universe and gameplay is the same, you can do collective contracts together for higher pay, or just show off how cool your ship looks.Originally posted by Daedalao

Almost all pilots interested in PvP are in a clan already, and by and large will only engage in PvP against other clanned pilots, sometimes there are even guided tours of remote or hidden locations......

The darkside called me and I could not resist its sweet song and now I like the odd bout of fistycuffs, MP is the place to be even if you do not wish to get involved in PvP or CvC.
It really is worth it just for the company, space can be a lonely place.

New pilots can say to the pilots who are exist in Mp at that time and may want help.
Many of the pilots even bad clans want to help them. I know this because bad clans don't satisfy to kill new pilot. It is easy job.
NS and SW clans already want to help every new ones in MP.
