Is it worth having crew members onboard your ship?

YES!
They improve the rate your repair sys repairs your ship. Helps your targeting of your weapons. Find locations of interest (containers, valuable asteroids and wormholes). Keeps you from jumping into asteroids and planets.
Hire the highest loyalty you can find. then pay them 150-200 over normal rates. Keep checking their pay until they have 100 skill and 100 loyalty... then keep them at 150-200 above normal pay and you'll never have any jump ship and they'll always be there to help you out!
They are worth the measly credits it takes to keep them.

Yes......but beware failing on too many contracts, they will lose loyalty points with each contract you fail and then they will jump ship when the loyalty drops too low

I'm just looking for a touch of clarification on the mechanics of crew members. I'm pretty sure I know exactly how it works, but the manual doesn't go into excruciating detail, and I'd like to double-check.
Basically, there's a "cycle" countdown that starts at 99 when the crew member is hired. When this countdown reaches 0, they are paid as indicated on the roster (plus any extra you've assigned), and their loyalty determines whether or not they'll stay. For example, a loyalty of 87 means there's an 87% chance they'll stay on board through the next cycle.
Correct?
Now, onto the extra (or garnished) wages. I assume that, by paying your crew members extra, their skill and loyalty levels increase by some amount at the end of each payment cycle (provided they don't leave). The converse is true if you underpay them.
Correct?
Anything else I should know?

Two correct answers go to the top of the class. Loyalty and skill do not go higher than 100, just keep the wages up and they will stay.
