Am I to understand that there are solar systems that arent part of the main map in the game?

If so, when you get to an uncharted system, do you see things in the local map or do you need to get visual and then mark the map your self?

(for example, if I were to discover a planet will it appear on my map or just visually?)

most objects will appear on the nav map when you are in range, though not all, I don't know of any planets ( in the standard universe) that don't appear on the nav map, though i do know of a couple of hidden wormholes.

Generally speaking, those outside standard solar systems will appear on any sort of navigational equipment. However, there may be a few that don't, but the main difficulty in finding them is just getting within radar range. In a 2,000x2,000 square, that'd be 40k sectors. 40k divided by 5 (radar range): 8,000... That's 8,000 jumps you'd need to commit to find all of anything in those areas. Sure would take a while... *jump, jump, jump...*
There's also an alternative way of finding objects, but it's cheating, and I condemn cheating whilst I do it many times a day.

SO one could see a planet out the window but not on the nav computer?

I ask people... networking isnt really cheating?? :)

LOL. Networking? I don't need others to cheat with:D

Nope, I'm a statistical cheater. Though ER, through its modding capabilities, is rather easy to disassemble for closer examination, I have yanked apart games through methods such as creating small, no-brainer programs with which I can cheat, or using the more sophisticated programs of others. Reverse-engineering some programs is impossible, but with many, it's doable and I have done it. In this case, however, a plain-text file reveals to me the location of literally everything in the universe, i.e. RiftSpace, the RS gate, secret wormholes, Vonari Station, Lost Rucker gate, and so on. I have cheated at every game I own after legitimately beating it or as close to as possible (finishing storyline, finding all significant secrets, etc.) I prefer it that way; cheat codes are limited, and if I can use cheat codes, so can others, so...
-Edit
Good god, RiftSpace is EXTREMELY unstable. I literally only sifted through data files; did not change them, and the game went KABLOOEY with runtime error 10. Ugh...

Well, I found my first unknown system last night near wolf...
I tried to land on this pretty green planet that had the green landing lights and all, but when I just got ready to dock I would blow up? Anyone know whats up with that?

Some planet atmospheres are too dense for a safe descent. As you get lower, the atmospheric density becomes too high for your shields to protect against and you will eventually be crushed. If you keep your altitude high enough, above around 25-30,000 you can usually safely fly in the atmosphere. Most planets do not have such high atmospheric pressure, but a few do.

Yeah it was near a black hole...
I can figure out how to get back to that spot.... Where is that wormhole to wolf again?
