for exploring purposes i have often thought that the navigation screen needs another zoom level.
what i mean is you can zoom right out and show a 64x64 (or similar range) grid of sectors. Each sector with a significant mass object (base, planet, sun, [gate/wormhole]) would show up white, the rest would be default blue. No other detail would be necessary, just that "something" is out there.
to keep this tied to exploring, perhaps it could be linked to fitting the fuel converter.
the time to render this could be easily explained by "gravimetric sensor response speed"
its just an idea, but it would mean that all those hidden sytems might be experienced without hacking the universe file.
I would turn this into a vote, but i dont seem t be able to....

Yea, that would be a good Idea... but if you want to know if something is out there, I think it would also be a good idea to include a directional radar or some other navigation device to the game, recieving only 45 - 30 degrees of the direction rather than the omni-directional 360 degrees navigation reciever being used, witch results in amplified power to the needed direction.

i like that thought, but i was trying to make it easy for Vice by a mere tweak of the existing nav map

I like both ideas. It could do the sense of scale good to know there's stuff "out there".

Good ideas.
Maybe something more vague, like the Science Officer's container detection - When you jump into a sector, and an uncharted sector is within range (~30 sectors?), it'll say something like, ?

I'd love to see a couple of things.
1. the ability to zoom out more than the 5 sector range, possibly with a fog of war effect ( this would also be good if it remembered which sectors were unvisited and therefore stayed greyed out..........)
2. a viable 3d map which would allow you to check the space without having use the 'flip' function. This would allow the game to be more 3 dimensional, and possibly make the creator a lot of money for nasa

Great idea. I've almost given up exploring. It's too time consuming, and with work and a household to mantain and the mrs and etc etc. I dont have the time to spare.
The long range scanner would be a great help. Dont make it too easy though...... balance, everything must be balanced.
