Exploring planet surfaces strategies

Post by CR0WBAR »

After searching all previous posts I realized this could benefit us all. There will be another topic for anyone who wants to share locations of their findings however lets discuss strategies here.

Exploring planet surfaces strategies

Post by CR0WBAR »

First I'de like to comment on a post I found on another thread. I noticed someone say you will miss alot at 10K altitude yet what I've found I can see from 5K as well as 30K. Yes the green brackets reference an appropriate and direct landing path to the city dock. Red is an obstructed path. I'm wondering if anyone has found anything besides platinum, diamond, and metal mining any of the planets?

I would really like to know how any of you are systematically searching planet surfaces entirely with certainty. I've found that as far as available navigation the planets are shaped like a coin. If you stay on a 0 heading when you reach the top as seen from the navigation map on the default F1 key the compass flips around to 180 and you begin to head down in regards to the overhead navigation map view. Same with 90 and 270 as I try to circumvent the planet horizontally.

Comments on many topics can often be subjective, what works for one person might not for another. There can also be other factors, such as the night side of a planet versus the light side effecting visibility (30K can be pretty dark at a distance for certain objects). The objective can also be relevant, such as missing a mining opportunity versus spotting something visually.

Technically, you don't have to systematically search planet surfaces entirely, you have visual aids and sensors to help make the process easier and faster. Upgrading your ship can help improve the success rate of the process. For a general procedure, I recommend picking a level Y position with 0 pitch, descend to the planet, then just turn left/right to fly around the planet on the same Y level. The drop your next pass to a lower or higher Y level, say around 1000 or so, depending on the upgrade level of your scanner, then repeat. It's a slower process then trying to just fly a couple of high speed passes, but it's more detailed and may help you locate items you might otherwise miss. There is also plenty of open space exploration to do and exploration in other environments if you need a break from exploring planets for a while.

Yup, that's right. If the indicator shows, there's something to dock there.

I still think there should be more stuff on planets, by the way.

To save Vice the trouble, I'd like to point to another thread... only problem being I don't know which one.
Vice made a few points about this exact thing, though I can't remember those as well, but he generally denounced them, but I think he said that 'if it gained enough interest, there may be a smaller form in a future game.' Hehehe...
