At the start of the game, when you enter the first big station ahead of you, you can get the 'recover the item' quest It's indicated by a purple dot on the radar. Is this item a big cube?
And how the hell do I recover such a thing?
(Do I have to target it first? because it seems that you can only target ships right??)

The purple dot is indeed the object you seek. In order to recover the object you have to fly close to it and use your "tractor/mining" beam.
This, of course, depends on whether you have purchased one. They are available at Stations and planets everywhere. Since the inventory at the stations and planets is rotated, it may take more than one visit to find one. It is a "must have" item.

Good advice from MMaggio having a "tractor/mining" beam is a must have item.....it will also allow you to mine asteroids....each cargo bay you have holds up to 25 units of platinum, diamonds or metal. Platinum is the best item to sell for good profit. Just get close enough to asteroid to see the red flare on asteroid when you activate your "tractor/mining" beam and sweep the asteroid and hear the items loaded into you cargo bay. Once your cargo bays are full just head to a starport and sell your items for a quick profit.

You may have read it some place but press and hold the keyboard "B" key to activate your tractor/mining beam. I believe alt B keeps it active till you push the B key again. Good luck out there.
