Running out of Gas somewhere Far, Far away?? and no stations or planets around?? Here are a few tip's for the new pilots to help from running out of fuel too soon.
1. When you are just cruising around space and looking for containers or other points of interest...turn the IDS off and shut down your engines/fuel. you will coast at the speed you were going when you pushed the space bar to turn the IDS off and you will save fuel. If you want to go faster just engage the after burners until you reach the desired speed...then turn the IDS off.
2. When you are Jumping long distances and you are sure of where you are going....Turn on your afterburners and reach the maximum speed that you want, then turn off your IDS with the space bar and shut down your engine/fuel, then Jump using the F2 button and you will reach your Nav point using only 5 units of fuel and you will continue your forward drift without having to use any additional fuel and you will be doing the same speed..then set a new nav point and jump again...etc, until you reach your destination. Do Not Jump into an Asteroid field using this method. It can be hazardous to you.
3. A fuel converter comes in real handy....so long as you are near a star or nebula. But I personally don't use one...using the above mentioned tips I have as yet to run out of fuel.
4. Buy a larger fuel tank when you are running into deep space. If you know that you will be exploring the unknown plan ahead....I normally use a 1200 unit tank ( I like the combat and I use my afterburners a lot.) but, if I am going a long way and I am not sure what I will find I use a larger tank and I use the tips listed above to help conserve fuel and I always remember where my point of no return should be....How far I can go on a particular tank of fuel. 5 units for jumping.
Hope this helps...Good Flying.
Anyone know of some other good tips? please add them to the list.

Just a cuple points to add.
When your jumping you dont need to accelerate with the after burner before jumping. Just turn IDS off then jump. Your ship will accelerate to its max speed without burning up the fuel for the thruster. Also remember your jump drive will use 1 unit of fuel for each sector you jump. EX if you have a class 3 jump drive at its max range (3 sectors) it will use 3 units of fuel. so you can esaly calculate how far you can go with your fuel tank.
You can also accelerate with IDS off without useing the thruster. I beleve its the z to accelerate and x to decelerate but I could be wrong as I remaped several keyes. It speeds up and slows your ship in increments so it uses less fuel. Takes longer but the thing to remember when concerveing fuel is the less you hear your engens the better.

All good points. A game feature suggestion would be to have a button in the trade screen called "Emergency fuel request" that would send a broadcast out to any ship that would be willing to warp to your location. A trade session would be established where the rescuer would ask you if you would be willing to pay 5-10 times the station market rate for a tank of gas. You could agree and make an NPC happy or tell him to F&#%* off and sit there stranded while you contemplate loading up a save game. It would add some depth to a real world situation and could be quite entertaining in a Multi Player session.

You know, Slick! That's an excellent idea!
Why didn't I think of it?
Seriously, that should work very well, like sending out a distress call that would appear as an "update bulletin" advising one & all that a ship is in trouble.
It might even make for an interesting mission especially if you are in hostile space.
I repeat, an excellent idea!

Welcome Slickvic. A good point. In MP one would have their Clan member help out but the safest bet would be to make sure your ship has the capability to travel far distances without having to refuel. It takes approx 400 units of fuel to get to the secret location to jump to Rift Space and that's also by not using IDS.Originally posted by Slickvic

Ah, fantastic stuff here. I also hadn't realized that using the fulcrum drive bumps your speed up to maximum (slightly above it, I think; manually I can only hit 3980 or so, but the readout indicates <4k when I finish a fulcrum jump).
Your carrier destroyed, you drift endlessly through the void.

That is a cool suggestion.....I have helped out several pilots out of fuel including different Clans. Usually someone will post a call for help here in the forum, or they would send a u2u, or use ICQ, or even go online and send a text message for help. I am sure a trade/in-game credits for fuel will be offered. I always enjoy helping others in need.....that's reward enough for me

I set the heading once in the map console then point my ship towards the destination point and then use the [alt key] + [jump key]. This makes the ship jump the max amount of the jump drive. Note that the ship will always jump the direction you are facing with this method. Simply press [alt key] + [jump key] until you get within range of desitination point.

If your going on a long journey please note that the system compensates to the nearest 5 degress (or so ) so you will need to re calibrate for really long journies, though it is still very usefullOriginally posted by Xiuhcoatl
