Quick question on cannisters and navigation

Post by BadJelly »

OK, so I found a simple route that lets me pickup Phantom's (may have been Predators?) from space and sell em at about 1.1mill apiece. Add that to a belly full of missiles from the other container and that's about 6mill per 5 minute run.

Strange that the lev 10 cannon sells for that price, given that the lev 12 cannon on my ship would sell for significantly less but I guess that's just economics for you.

Anyway, to the questions...

1. Given that I have not checked out every container message in each of the basic sectors are there more profitable options? Don't need to know where, just an idea of what a 'good' run from cannisters to a shop would net.

2. What is considered a 'good' laser? I haven't seen anything better than a 4 for a long time.

3. Do the multitude of systems not displayed on the main quadrant map actually have jump gates to any of them, or do you just point yourself into empty space and jump until you realise you went the wrong way? (I'm not going to mention how long I did this for yesterday :) )

4. Having found the Sapphire asteroid, how extensive is the interior? I found some cannisters almost immediately but haven't explored to see if there are others inside.

Of course, Vice may have put these close to the entrance to trick people into not exploring.

....Then again, given they aren't that valuable, maybe it's a double bluff and he put them so close to fool people into not looking further to try and find the really good stuff.

....But then, perhaps thinking that we might catch on to the fact that he fooled us into not looking for the good stuff, he might not actually have put any good stuff inside thereby making us spend hours crawling around caves in vain..

..Damn you and your wily ways Vice.

So I got myself a Hunter now. God it's slow. :)

Quick question on cannisters and navigation

Post by Vice »

1 - Certain hidden containers will provide very profitable options (another certain asteroid cave helps along with other uncharted options and finishing the beacon quest). 6-million is pretty good, other high profit options are comparable, although you'll like find some that pay somewhat better.

2 - Class 4 is good, only one better is a fusion laser.

3 - They do not have gates, they require exploring open space to discover.

4 - They are pretty big with several caves to explore in. The one in Sapphire is good practice :) It can also help new players get started with a safe and profitable trade run.

Quick question on cannisters and navigation

Further to the question of container navigation.

When my science op informs me of containers in the sector he supplies a compass bearing and a pitch value, but what at range are these things at? I mean how long can I expect to have to sit at 4K with IDS off till I reach them - or do I have to use the ALT-F2 directional jump.

I'm only asking because after 30 mins at 4k with IDS off and 15 minutes at ALT-F2 I come up empty handed and was absolutely bored stiff so I gave up. I've also tried sacrificing a sys-repair equipment for a cargo scanner but still no joy. Just let me know the average time it should take to find these things please and whether it can be done with IDS off or not.

Many thanx in anticipation.

If you look on your map in the nav screen and zoom out one click the containers will be in the same major grid section that you are in i.e. not the smallest squares but the next size up. In both cases you had passed them. Also keep a lookout on your radar screen for a purple blip that will be them. You can do it with ids off (never alt-f2) also sometimes they are on the surface of a planet and not floating in space. If there is a planet near by try jumping out of the major sector and then jump back into it at a different location to get a different compass bearing this can help a lot. You almost never see them untill your right on top of them also.

Thank you very much for that info - it's just what I needed to know. I see where I've been going wrong now. Once again many thanx.

Quick question on cannisters and navigation

Post by Colt .45 Killer »

im having somewhat of the same problem as daug was, whenever my science op tells me theres containers in the area, i turn to his direction and find the nearest (in my case only) purple dot and do a hot burn in that direcion, cept every time i end up at a space station...

edit: ok i seem to have found a cave with some goodies in it this time, but there werent any caves the other times. this MIGHT be because im half color blind, so il ask my brother / sister to ID the color for me.

Quick question on cannisters and navigation

I'm still trying to understand how to locate the cannisters. I was given 143 pitch -3 in one system. How do I set that? I tried looking for the purple blip and kept coming back to the gate. I jumped around the grid for a purple blip and still kept coming back to the gate.

Hello,

143 is your compass heading, center screen at the top.

-3 is from the HUD, so just below 0.

The purple blip is the gate, look for a second one, or try a few other systems, don't fly to fast. Also check on the planets.
