As much as I love the modding ability of Freelancer (it too is one of the things that keep me returning to the game once or twice a year), the combat is another thing that keeps me coming back. While not joystick-based, the controls and combat in FL feel fluid and fast enough for me to give me the rush I'm looking for.Originally posted by SkiiwaWhat saved Freelancers Butt is its ability to be Modded. I still fool around with that game. There is a Pretty good Star wars mod That I found on LancerreactorOriginally posted by Brian Rubin
A space sim ain't worth its salt unless its flown with a joystick, IMO. Exceptions like Freelancer happen once and again.![]()

I also use the ST290 (pro)
Haven't had issues with lost settings tho..
I must say ever since games like Freelancer, DarkStar One, etc.. I have grown quite used to using the mouse and found it excellent as long as the game is setup well for it.
Evochron Renegades works well with the mouse (up for up, down for down config)
I have to say tho, that Riftspace is hard for me to play with any controller (though I haven't tried keyboard).. I have found it far too sensitive, even with the Joystick sensitivity set on low.
I would feel a lot better if it had the reverse mouse option, like Evochron, but I am slowly getting used to mouse point, as my best option.

I use a Saitek X52 which I program for different flight sims - A nice HOTAS system that does what it says on the tin, but for me I would have prefered more buttons on the throttle instead of the rotary switches - IMHO

I use the rotary buttons to control the horizontal and lateral "slides". When mining, after closing on the asteroid, I just set the lateral drift for a few mps and "drift" around the rock while mining away! Seems to monefaster that way instead of just blasting away ot one spot or side.
Supposedly they are for "trim" in flight simulators.

Funny, that method of mining also works the same way in Jumpgate.Originally posted by MMaggio

Hi MMaggio. When you program the rotary switches, do you have them as an axis as defined by the in game options screen, or do you use the saitek software to program them as bands. These rotaries have always seemed awkward to use for me as you have to keep trying to find the centre dead zone after using it or when they're not in use, and when you have to be quick you often don't have time to fumble with them. Consequently for me they are a wasted feature, but I'd be very interested to hear how you, or other X52 users, program and use the rotary switches as I could learn something here.

I use the top rotary for variable control of the left/right strafe thrusters and the thumb rotary for variable control of the up/down strafe thrusters. I also use the 4-way toggle button on the front of the throttle for on/off thruster control when I need rapid control.

Attn: Daughenie,
I believe in the Saitek X series in ways that most don't understand. I have mastered the intricasies of the Saitek programming software to the opint that I can make the controller do things it wasn't designed to do... but that's another story.
I never use the game program to assign keys to my controller, with the exception of Vice's games, and then only the 5 axis'. All other commands are written into the Saitek gaming profile.
To answer your question, I use "Bands" for the rotary switches and set them for 25% + and 25% - which can give me a large "dead space" If you need/want further advice in programming your Saitek, contact me via U2U. I'll be glad to help.
Have fun...

Hello,
I am left handed, and as such can not use many control devices. This covers joysticks, mice and trackballs.
99% of all games I play, I play with the mouse the exception to this is MS FlightSim. The joystick I do have is a Saitek Cyborg 3D Platinum USB.
It may seem strange to most, but I have become used to using the mouse like a joystick.
My current controlers are a Logitech G15 (the bigger version) and a Razer Lachesis mouse. The mouse has on the fly sensitivity setting which is very usefull.
Have looked at most of the specialised controlers, they are all designed for right handed people.

Sadly, this is true. I have suggested to Saitek that they offer a left-handed version of their "X" series, but they claim the mold production costs would be prohibitive. Forgive me for not remembering which model it is, but they do make a joystick that is designed for left and right-handed players.

The Problem "daughenie", has with the dials is a Problem..What I did, is Drew a Line with a permanent marker with them centered. Still have to look to see the line but it seems to work for me.
I'm looking at my AV8R-01 and it looks like it could be used left handed?
