How do I use the Fuel Converter?

Post by Kveldulf »

After a few dozen trade runs in the Sol system, I was able to afford a fuel converter for my ship. The problem is, I cant figure out how to use it. According to the manual, it says that I convert energy from Stars and Nebulas into fuel. So I park near the closest sun, and cut my engines to watch the tank refill. After being sucked into the sun and killed, I decided to try the Nebula. I think I sat in a nebula cloud for about an hour, and my fuel still didnt increase.

Am I missing an on/off switch somewhere, or did the manual just not go into the details of how to use it?

It's covered a little later on in the manual. It is used in conjunction with the tractor beam. The beam recovers the particles, the converter transforms them into fuel, then your fuel tank is filled. Sit near a star or in a nebula cloud, press Alt-B and watch the fuel gauge increase.

Ah, ok. I see it now. When I had issues, I just searched for "Fuel Converter" instead of just Fuel, so it never showed up.

Now that one question is awnsered, do I need to be within 100 meters of the surface of the star to make fuel, or can I sit just outside of the gravitational pull and do it?

You will need to be within the gravity field of the star, but not within 100 meters (you'd be destroyed pretty quick). You should be able to recover enough particles when the gravity field registers about 500-800 on the gauge.

I usaly dont notece it start working untill about 930 on the gravity gauge. It might start before then just at a slower rate.

It is rather funny to watch the trafic get caught in the gravity and burn up while I'm refueling. Them capital ships usaly dont take long to get sucked in. Some manage to jump away just in time though.

I might adopt this refuelling method just for the entertainment value alone.

It's a flaw in the AI, really. It should be fixed.
