I've finally gotten a walker and I'm loving it but I have a frustration about mining... It seems there's no easy way to avoid just grabbing metal constantly, and with only one cargo slot, it's practically impossible to get anything else without constantly pooping out cargo boxes with metal in them, which then the walker tries immediately to pick back up.
Is there a method for reliably getting *not* metal in a walker?

Yes, install the specialized mining beam on your ship that you want to apply to your walker. It transfers from ship to walker and back again whenever you swap. And with the right crew config, you can swap different beams around for different tasks if you carry different types.
Without the specialized mining equipment, it's more a matter of trying to find material hotspots with less metal and more of other things via terrain scanning.

Wait 'till you try to recover a container which has fallen into a lake.
Eventually, you will get pretty good at it.
