Today I found out that scavenging random cargo on planets and in space is actually quite lucrative if you're a bit lucky.
I found an auto cm launcher for example, which got me instantly 5 million, then I got a cannon heatsink which got me another 1 million.
Now my question is: Does it matter what type of planet or environment I'm in? Or are the loot drops always kinda random?

Re: Scavenging cargo
It does matter where you are for what kind of cargo will most likely appear. The random calculations take into consideration the tech level of the region you are in when establishing the types of items in cargo containers. It's still random, so there's a (much slimmer) chance of finding a higher value item in a cargo container within a low tech level region while there is a higher chance in a higher tech level region (roughly ~300% potential total variation).

I went to a high tech system and found a lot of nice things. I made 13 million today. That's quite a good haul I'd say.

Yup, salvage and recovery has been given a big increase in Legacy (as have other non-combat activities).
