Mouse stops working on second boot

Post by WhiteFang »

First post so just want to say I am very excited to find this game, it is so atmospheric.

My problem:
- Mouse does not work on second boot
- on first boot all works and I did some tutorials and defined some controls
- if I ALT-TAB to desktop and hover mouse over game on taskbar the animations on first screens (spinning logo et al) work but once I click on the icon they are frozen also.
- note the very first "second" time I tried to run the game I had downloaded the big mod pack here and changed the sounds and graphics using the menu in that, after uninstalling I deleted it also form the Evochron main directory.
-to attempt to fix it I uninstalled the game several times deleting the main directory manually then the 2 directories under documents and then ran ccleaner to delete temp files and then delete the 2 registry entries then after all that reinstall and reboot and it worked then.
- mind you I am unsure if it will work again once it has run once but after 4 hours of this I went to bed.
- I tried altering no graphics settings at all and still happens

My situation:
- 10 month old Windows 10 PC with 32gb ram and 1080ti
- TrackIR
- Thrustmaster Warthog
- Thrustmaster Ferrari Red Legend Steering Wheel (for European Truck Simulator)
- Steam Version of Evochron Legacy
- only a handful of games installed
- monitor Phillips 4K (60hz) but running at 2560 by 1440
- Kensington Trackball Mouse

Anyone have any ideas?

Hello and welcome. Glad you are otherwise enjoying the game.

Not sure what that could be and 'stops working'/'does not work' is kind of vague. That is, does the pointer appear back in the game and mouse clicking just doesn't work? Or does the pointer itself not appear at all in the game upon restoring from Alt-Tab/reboot? If the pointer itself is not reappearing, that might suggest something is holding the pointer outside of the game field. If only mouse clicking isn't working, then that might suggest something is blocking the game from being able to perform the required input check. The game merely listens for mouse input, so at one level or another, there may be something blocking those inputs from reaching the game as needed (or changing them).

If something in a mod or other program/software running in the background is somehow injecting or otherwise interfering with standard game operations (like mouse polling), then the only possible solutions would likely be a fix for the software interfering with the game's ability to receive the required inputs or pinning down which component is causing the alteration and removing it from the equation.

Until then, it'd probably be good to check the basics such as verifying the latest driver for the Kensington is installed and evaluating any other programs that might be running in the background at the same time (ie video/control/input related that may change after a reboot). You might also try alternate restoration options (if Alt-Tab taskbar icon click is a/the primary issue), such as using Alt-Tab to restore the game from a minimized state rather than clicking on a taskbar icon. You can also try a 'Locked' screen mode in the Options menu, exit the game, then restart it. That way, you can test to see if something might behave differently when the screen condition is forced and locked in full screen.

Ok worked it out :)

My Phillips 4k Monitor only works with 59hz in windows settings.

If before starting the game I change this to 60hz it changes my screen resolution to 640 instead of 2560 so then I change it back to 2560 by 1440 and then it works but I have to do it each time.

Not sure what is happening but it works!

Thanks for the support. Interesting about the refresh rate, so it sounds like when the game polls for available screen resolutions (through DirectX), 2560X1440 is not reported as available at that refresh rate, so it defaults to what is reported as available. I wouldn't expect that to impact mouse functionality, but stranger things have happened :)

There might be a few options to work around/solve the issue:

- There may be an updated monitor driver (not video/display driver) that works with the different refresh rates to allow the game to detect the higher resolution, so checking for the latest driver for your monitor might be one step to try, if you haven't already. But it could be that it's only happy with one particular refresh rate for D3D/resolution detection.

- Switching to a 'Locked' screen mode and manually setting the 2560X1440 resolution (if/when it appears in the Screen Resolution list) might allow it to enable by bypassing the automatic detection mechanism in the 'Optimized' resolution mode.

- When in a 'Locked' screen mode, you can optionally add '-forceres' to the command line when launching the game and it will attempt to force whatever resolution you select in the Options menu.

- See if the DPI settings are getting changed somehow between the two refresh modes. Right click on a blank area of your desktop, then left click on 'Display Settings'. Under 'Scale and Layout', see if the value there is something other than 100%. You can try changing that temporarily to a 1:1 pixel alignment to see if the behavior changes at all.

Glad you were able to pin down the likely cause.

Also keep in mind that, when you Alt-Tab out of the game, keyboard inputs still affect the game. In unpredictable ways. For example, if you have a menu open when you Alt-Tab, you can end up doing things like unintentionally jettisoning or selling equipment. Consequently, you might find that you've disabled your mouse control by pressing certain keys while doing something "outside" the game.

Solved it!

My Phillips Monitor had a DisplayPort setting of 1.1 but changing it using a mini control stick on the back of it to 1.2 and now windows reports 60hz on 2560 by 1440 and both games work just fine all the time.

It wasn't the mouse at all it was actually freezing the whole screen (that is why animations were not showing/moving).

These games are so much fun! Incredible achievement!

Thanks to both of you really appreciate it :)

BTW I tried both locked and optimised and both work (just letting you know).
