Moving the default save data folder to the \Users folder...

Tips, tactics, and general discussion for Evochron Legacy.

Would you prefer the default save data folder be moved to the Windows \Users folder?

Yes - I wouldn't mind or would prefer the save data folder to be in the \Users folder.

Moving the default save data folder to the \Users folder...

Post by Vice »

I am considering moving the default save data folder to the \Users folder tree to accommodate other pending/possible changes associated with the next planned update and where some might also consider a more ordinary location where such files might expect to be found.

If yes, the new location would be moved to \Users\[username]\Documents\EvochronLegacy and the game would take care of copying files from the old location to the new one automatically.

If no, the default location would remain \sw3dg\EvochronLegacy from the main drive.

This change would not impact the default install folder location for the direct download version of the game or the Steam version, so any custom files/folders in the install folder will remain and continue to function as before. This change is only for the save data folder where save games, engineering templates, ship templates, and game settings are kept.

I chose "yes" because I can't remember if I've ever really needed to access my saved games. My pilot profiles, yes ... but not my saves.

They utilize the same filenames (pilot*.sw), so they'd just be kept and managed in a different folder with this change.

Meaning pilotn.sw would no longer be located in the main game folder?

No longer in the current default save data folder. The save data folder is the same regardless of where the game is installed (ie the 'main game folder'), but for the direct download version, it is usually the same unless the player specifies a different install folder and/or save data folder. This change would simply move the 'default' save data folder part of the equation over to the \Users\Documents\EvochronLegacy folder. You would of course be able to move it back to the root c:\sw3dg\EvochronLegacy via the 'savedir.txt' option if you'd prefer to keep the original location. Being able to customize the location will still remain.

Edit: If this change goes forward (and it looks like it will), you'll simply need to include this in the first line of the savedir.txt file to keep the original save data folder location (as c:\sw3dg\EvochronLegacy):

c:

The game will then add the \sw3dg and \EvochronLegacy folder names to the line for the original location.

If I understand it ... even if you change the default, I can still override that and keep the files where they are now?

Like Marvin, I've never really needed to access saved games, or even pilot profiles if it comes to that - though I did once renumber all the pilot profiles to remove and create gaps in the list to suit how I was 'filing' the various versions. That was for original Mercenary - not needed to repeat the action in EMII

So I'll vote for whatever Vice feels is best for the game and I assume that means I vote 'Yes'

Yes, the 'savedir.txt' option will continue to be available, simply use the drive example above to return it to the original location if/when desired.

Just a thought ... I might feel differently if you also decide to move the Mods folder. ???

That setup won't change, it will remain the install folder for the customizing options that use it.
