[EL] Erratic jump drive

Post by AcePalarum »

Okay, quick question on an issue I've been seeing when jumping to stations. I use a right-click to lock the NAV marker onto the station, align the ship, and jump. Most of the time it works fine, coming out of the jump coasting right into a station entrance. But every so often, I come out of the jump some distance above the entrance, so that my ship smacks into the various antenna arrays etc on the top of the station. Yet the NAV marker is still locked in the middle of the docking bay display column as expected. So far I haven't crashed into a station badly enough to damage/destroy my ship, so at the moment it qualifies as an annoyance rather than a Problem.

Is this expected behavior? I've been using a Mantis drive and part of my brain wants to blame that, since I can't quite recall just how long the jump irregularities have been occurring. It just strikes me as possibly unintended behavior and I wanted to make sure it isn't a symptom of some underlying problem.

This has been happening to me on occasion ever since EL was released. I've only ever noticed it happening in multiplayer though.
I always figured it had something to do with my often-terrible internet connection.

A couple of possibilities come to mind based on past reports and testing. First, some have right clicked on a sensor blip with telemetry data that is near a station hangar (often resulting in the destination coordinates being right on top of station structures and not the hangar's more even number location). Another can be modules built in close proximity to a hangar, causing arrival jumps point to possibly get shifted around. Shouldn't happen with default stations, but could happen with player built stations.

It's a good idea to always watch what coordinates are being plotted when you right click on anything, then compare the values with the mouse over highlighted telemetry location of a given object. If they don't match, it's possible another nearby signal is throwing off a desired signal locator. Manually typing in values can override such telemetry signal cross-overs.

If it's something you keep running into consistently at a particular location, I can look into it further if you send me the profile saved in the sector where it is occurring.

As RC said, it happens every now and then ... but it's an issue which has been hard to pin down. Sometimes it happens when jumping from one location which is either higher or lower than the station. Sometimes not. I've found that, after slamming into the upper antenna array (I have yet to damage my ship), I can turn away from the array - toward another docking triangle on the compass - and execute a second jump (without re-setting the jump point) ... and the Mantis drive then works as expected.

I've done this more than once as well. But I did notice while twootling around in Sol system that jumping to Sol Station aimed for Gate 1 (heading 180) produced the off-target arrival every time. The other 4 gates were fine.

Sol Station telemetry is working for me testing it this evening. But if you can provide steps to duplicate what you've observed, I'll check into it further.

So, it only happens when using the 180 gate ... and it happens each time you use it. Where are you when you initiate the jump?

That's a bit problematic, as I sailed out of Sol back to the gated systems, but I'll see if I can come up with something more definitive than my vague descriptions so far. :)

Various points both in-sector and out. Honestly, after the third time or so I just stopped jumping for that gate, but I know there was at least one jump back from a contract and at least one jumping back from the asteroid belt.

Since you can save 100 profiles you might consider saving one in the more out of the way or hard to get to locations so you can revisit easily if you need to have another look around. :)

A wise idea indeed. (Though it would have kept me from the whirlwind sightseeing tour I just completed. :) )

No it wouldn't. Just clone your main profile at some out-of-the-way location ... then either use the clone as your new main profile and rename your original profile to something else (after you finish playing) or go back to the pilot profile list and re-select your main profile before continuing your journey. 8)
