Change simulation settings and faction affiliation in single player profiles.

Post by Vice »

Would you like to be able to change the faction affiliation and simulation values in the single player state of your profiles? If implemented, the options would be available in the 'Rename' option of the pilot manager menu, providing the ability to select the faction affiliation and simulation settings in the same way as you can when creating a new profile.

If you would like to only be able to change the simulation settings -or- the faction affiliation, but not both, go ahead and vote 'Yes', then indicate in a reply that you only want one or the other.

Keep in mind that if you were to change the faction affiliation, you would instantly become hostile to the original faction, resulting in being bumped out of a station you may be docked at and immediately attacked. So before changing a faction, you may want to save your profile out in neutral space or current enemy territory first.

Players who think the starting conditions should be permanent can still keep their initial selections, this would simply be an option for players who would want the ability to change them.

Change simulation settings and faction affiliation in single player profiles?

It's like you read my mind, I created a thread about this just last night ;) I don't have a particular preference regarding changing factions, but the implementation suggestion sounds good should anyone decide to become a turncoat. I'd assume you would lose your military rank and become an Ensign for the other side once you switch?

I'd definitely be interested in changing the other Simulation options though. I really messed up the Tech and Econ levels in Sapphire when I wiped the Alliance from the Quadrant in my Single Player game. I've had little luck in normalizing/raising the values once again on my own, and I think if I had the ability to turn off the Econ/Tech Changes I could build more modules and restore the system to it's former power (Under the Federation banner of course).

I'd be most interested in being able to change the simulation options. I have a main profile that has regional control set to 'Fixed'. Now that I have a better feel for the Legacy-verse, I'd like to see how the dynamic control system pans out. It seemed to me to be a bit much to email my profile to get a switch flipped.

I'm ok with being able to switch factions too. I have no problem if there is also a penalty for defection like ulukinatme mentioned.

Most sims (I'm thinking of the Silent Hunter series, but there are others) allow you to change options (in Silent Hunter, you can only do it while docked at your home port) so I see no reason why it shouldn't be allowed in EL. Of course, in Silent Hunter you don't get to take your U-Boat over to the Allies ... but that's another matter altogether.

I've received some feedback/interest in the ability to switch faction affiliation as well, so I decided to combine these into a combined poll since they would be sharing a combined menu option anyway. With both available individually, it allows players to pick and choose what they might want to do on their own.

Probably no penalty. Since forces join in war zones anyway, all 'Navy' ships whether ALC or FDN would likely continue to join in the common fight under one faction label. So I don't anticipate either a game-side need for a profile penalty nor a player side interest in applying one.
I'd definitely be interested in changing the other Simulation options though. This probably wouldn't have too much of an impact on that type of scenario in terms of your actions. All the simulation options do is enable or disable the game simulation of those categories. So your actions could still have such an affect. However, I do suspect some changes may have occurred over time with the simulation option active that resulted in a more dramatic shift.

100% so far, might be the most unanimous poll run on the forum :)

That's cool. I have no personal preference one way or the other. I did a lot of faction switching back in the day when I played JTL in Star Wars Galaxies. The devs forced you to restart from scratch in those scenarios, but one would think in most normal military scenarios if an Admiral was going to defect to the other side he would at least be a moderately ranked officer at the least and not a private, if not a high ranking officer in his new faction. It actually makes more sense not to enforce a huge penalty in reality.

Yes please. I would like to be able to try different settings without having to start over with a new profile.

I'm voting yes for both for the reason I mentioned in the other thread: If you can quickly change all those settings when hosting/playing MP, I don't really see any reason it shouldn't be allowed in SP.

Regarding the dangers of doing so I believe a small warning message when selecting another faction would be enough, but a more radical solution could be enforcing the player to save in open space before allowing a faction change.

Maybe a small penalty to the military rank as ulukinatme said when switching faction would feel more logical: but then again, you can switch factions in MP without any penalty to your military rank.

It would be great to be able to use my hard won profiles in SP with different startup options given that I made my original choices without knowing the implications to game play.

For clarification am I correct? In SP you'll be able to ...

# change your faction as we can do in MP
# change the economic settings and change back at will

and, if I change my equipment/weapons loadouts and/or frame configuration in SP will it carry over to MP?

:)

Hello,

Will the stations that we build under one faction become hostile when/if we switch factions?

More than likely is my guess.

The risk in changing factions is getting run out of your own home dock on a rail. Either that, or, perhaps switching could force the savepoint to be moved to the nearest available empty sector upon reload.

If I become a serial faction-switcher, does that technically make me IMG? :P

# change your faction as we can do in MP
Yes, just in the 'Rename Pilot' menu.
# change the economic settings and change back at will
Yes.

As it does now, yes.
Will the stations that we build under one faction become hostile when/if we switch factions?
Yes. So the point at which a player makes a change would need to be considered carefully and probably set up by them for desired conditions when they return with the new faction affiliation.

I would think, worst case scenario, if someone accidentally forgets to move their ship out of the station before they switch factions, it's not like they would get far. They would probably be destroyed pretty quickly by the short range station defenses, in which case they would just reload in the station infinitely until they switch their faction back. They could then leave the station safely, make their save in open space like they should have, and finally do their faction switch.

 That would be the logical thing to do. The illogical thing to do would be to complain that they keep dying and ask for another in-game fail-safe subroutine.

From several experiences in MP, as long as you are ready and hit afterburn away from the station you can then plot a small jump (next sector), cross your fingers and hold your breath and jump. At least you spawn outside the station :P

As poll results tended to get lost in the forum migration, the scoring for this poll start with 8 for yes and 0 for no so far, so 100% voting yes as of the time I post this.
