If you switch ships and if the equipment slots differ, then you don't get any message that you have to store or sell your surplus equipment, it just VANISHES and you don't get cash back.
When you store for the 1st time and buy a new ship in the shipyard you get this message instead.

As a general rule, you'll always want to manage your weapons, equipment, and cargo before trying to swap ships. The hangar crew will be glad to take anything you leave behind on a ship you quick swap with if you don't sell or store it yourself manually. Something to watch for. The same will happen with cargo if you don't sell it or store it before you give them your ship (you'll generally also see a discarded message in the message log when this occurs).

But then you have to know the exact equip slots for any ship !! Ok, for civ ships you can look in the shipyard (complicated), but you won't know for all military vessels, do they all have 8 slots?

All military ships all have 8 equipment slots in an unchangeable template.
If you're not sure of any limit(s), it's best to always play it safe and unmount any equipment you are unsure about being able to keep, then restore it after a ship swap if there is room. If not, then it's already where it will need to be for next time.

Yes, I understand now. I think by paying only 1 hangar fee, I can do:From post: 187833, Topic: tid=12653, author=Vice wrote:If you're not sure of any limit(s), it's best to always play it safe and unmount any equipment you are unsure about being able to keep, then restore it after a ship swap if there is room. unload equipment, cargo
swap ship
re-load equipment, cargo
Is this right or is it 1 fee for every item you transfer? I ask because in my xxx78 version I still don^t pay for hangar (I know you have fixed this.)

Entering the hangar once and completing those actions should only result in one transaction fee, which is applied when you exit the hangar.
