A bit embarassing I find myself on tech support again:P

I haven't been playing in a while due to school. Thought I'd take a break and play a tad.

I haven't changed things around a whole lot. In this version I am playing SP when noones online which is where this crash occurs.

It was planetside on a sulphur (yellow atmosphere) based planet.

The only appreciable thing that's been modded was the nav/trade/inventory/build consoles modded with an image to make them transparent.

This is the event viewer error.

I wouldn't care if it wasn't crashing "moderately" consistently.

Any ideas? I am busy with school at the moment, not much time to trouble shoot, I'm thinking faulty ram or busy hard drive (can't retrieve file quick enough)? I still have system ram free (apx. 1Gb) and video ram available (apx 60mb). Playing on high settings as always / since before minus shadows.
I play music from winamp as well as play, so perhaps that's where the harddrive hiccup is happening....though it seems that since I updated microsoft office it happened....perhaps just a fluke....will look into what tasks / services are "now" running.

If something jumps out at you please let me know, if it keeps being a bother I'll attempt to undo the mod, system restore, re-install and test.

I found the offending file, still saved in a temporary directory.

Looks corrupt if you ask me.

Will clear out the temp folder tomorrow. Seems like perhaps a random memory error when copying to the temp folder? Or maybe a bad sector where Evochron lives on the HD?

Unless it was caused by this , I've had funny things on radio happen when they occur, and I'm right in that zone.
If I clear the temp folder and try again tomorrow it might be mystery solved.

ps. these aurora would be awesome to see in game on some planets sometimes

That appears to be an issue with the file extraction process, leaving a corrupted image behind that can't be loaded. Could be memory related. It could also be interference related (for example, a security program interrupting the load/read process). I doubt it would be a failing hard drive issue. So I'd recommend checking with available memory and interference causes first.

Edit: Also, a quick note on that file and others. They are left behind when the game runs into a problem, but the game will clear the files itself next time you start it. So you don't need to worry about manually clearing out that folder as the game will take care of it for you.

Seems very likely it was due to RAM.

Cleared out that folder and is running like butter again. Does the game clear that out automatically on startup or shutdown (properly exiting the game)?

Both. On startup to make the folder available for the new files to extract/load and on shutdown to clear out.
