Check the quadrant map. They will show up as little circles attached to the bigger circles of the gated star systems. You access a war zone via the same kind of jumpgate ... which is usually north of the attached system.

and then... nothing. I was just in a room flying around, and nothing ever happened. What am I missing?

Did you open the inventory console inside the carrier? There is no auto-docking tractor beam in carriers like there is in stations, so you are manually in control of linking up to carriers yourself via the inventory console.

Ahhh... I see. No, I did not open the inventory while in the carrier.
