I have a science space officer with me and i fly into a sector and at the top of my screen he tells me at 232 degrees and pitch 1 there is something there? I know how to set the degrees part but i'm too sure about the pitch. is there a place on my nav screen i can look to see what my pitch is? also how do you know how far you have to travel?

If you are in advanced Heads Up Display mode you should see a long bar with lines and numbers. (Kinda like a fighter pilot overlay)
That is your pitch meter.
At the top of the screen there should always be your degrees compass.
If you line them both up correctly you should be able to find the object pointed out by your science officer.
I hope that is detailed enough, if not feel free to ask more detail.
Alternatively I have a tutorial explaining all Display Elements in my in-depth guide.
You can find a link to it in my signature.

If you want to know more accurate coordinates for containers, SeeJay's site ( http://www.evochron2.junholt.se/ ) has a handy excel tool that lets you figure out the (roughly) exact coords. You just have to jump into the sector at 2 different locations, and input your jump coords, and science officer's bearings and pitches, and the tool calculates the distance and spits out X,Y,Z coords.
Also, on this note, I'd really love to see a digital pitch meter on the HUD as an option! Incremented HUD mods are fantastic, but I'm legally blind, so it can still be troublesome for me to figure out my exact pitch.

I'm using Sinbad's HUD mod, which includes a great incremented pitch ladder, but it's still not easy for me to distinguish the tics very well. I only have one functional eye, and the other is pretty weak even with a corrective lens. Yes, I wear monocles from time to time, and completely unrelated, I use a cane, and smoke a tobacco pipe.
I can get my pitch pretty accurate if I strain my eye, but it's not good for me, or very efficient.
