[EL] The use of a hangar deployable?

Post by DeathTech »

Built a hangar deployable.

And it does...? Nothing?

I can't dock with it.
I can't trade with it.

Its just ... There.
Anyone else concerned by the fact it does nothing?

I'm assuming the name hangar implies we can dock / land at it.
But it does not do that.

Or? Is it a bug?
Does anyone know?

Currently, you can use it in open space as a storage mechanism for your ship so that you don't have to take the fuel penalty to engage the open space cryo mode.

Is that the only function it will have in the foreseeable future?

For now, yes, may change in the future. To some, it's worth spending the few coin in metal to save at a location they want in open space, rather than the fuel units.

One possible modification might be that it could allow saving in/near environments that would otherwise not allow it (ie high gravity).

So if you deploy it, you don't dock with it before saving? You just save while you're in proximity to it? Reason I ask is I've never used it.

Yes, you just have to be close enough to the center of it for a quick save.

I haven't tried it out yet but it doesn't really make a lot of sense that building a hanger is better than just a straight forward cryo/fuel save.

10 units, which can certainly add up and can be harder to get, especially in certain locations. So for some, they wanted a way to still be able to save in open space (particularly explorers) without having to use up fuel. So rather than fuel, the hangar option lets them use a more readily available material that they can recover from most asteroids and still save in open space.

I think adding the ability to save while still moving will give them another benefit, since the player could then save in/near environments that would otherwise not allow them to. So I'll plan on adding that for the next update.

Vice: We could then save on planets, right?

No, that will likely remain the exclusive venue of city ports (due in no small part some technical/functionality reasons).

I found the deployable hangar was excellent for deep-space refueling of a stranded player. He dropped the hangar down, we flew inside, and I was able to transfer fuel much more rapidly since I didn't cryosave after every fuel pod spent. Also saved the 10 fuel, so there was much less waste.

Now I have a Deploy Constructor equipped standard.

What about being able to hot swap equipment or modules? Or reconfigure a frame? That would really increase its value.

Probably not reconfiguring a frame as that is the exclusive option for the shipyard. But hot swapping equipment or weapons to/from the cargo bay might be an option.

 I'd think you'd need a weapons officer aboard your ship if you wanted to do that.
